Boredom mostly. That and the way you two were going at it, I had to say something.

No offense meant with the 'girls' comment. It's simply an expression.

[Thanks to the stutter, he already knows who asked, but he'll humor him. If it was anyone else the answer would be akin to any number of the short, cryptic things he's handed Shinji in the past, but he figures if he asked outright he deserves a real answer, so here goes.]

Shinji-kun has a kind heart. He cares about people, even the ones who give him little reason to, even if it isn't often returned. He's someone who wants to see the good in everything, even when it's elusive. Who doesn't want to believe the world is harsh, even though it has been. He's someone who wants to make it better.

He loves music as much as I do, and he plays it beautifully. It's fun playing with him. I like seeing him smile. He accepts me. We were both alone, and he accepted me as his friend. He's someone I like spending time with. Being near him makes me happy.

Isn't that someone who deserves my love?

I don't know. But you make him sound like such a good person. He's lucky to have you as a friend...

[Boredom. Why was he not surprised? He let out an amused snort at the next bit.]

Oy... we hadn't even gotten started, matcha atama...

[He folds his arms, simply quirking one unimpressed brow at that.] Yeah, well... expression or not, I am not a girl, and I'll kick your ass to prove it, if you call me that again.

Just what is it about you pirates threatening to kick my ass? That's three out of three now.

That lovely lady Robin was much more hospitable. I liked her.

[Sanji just chuckled and smirked.] Nothing personal. Just reinforcing some manners in you, never to call me 'girl' again, that's all. I don't care who you are. [It's interesting to note, though, that somehow, he'd managed to piss off his other nakama as well.]

[Sanji tenses a little at that comment, bristling a bit, before he managed to calm himself down... act smooth, again.] Of COURSE Robin-chan was much more hospitable. She is a classy, elegant lady, with highly-refined manners! I trust YOU were polite to her, in kind?

Of course I was. She was kind and respectful and I was equally the same to her. I think we were rather hitting it off too. That hand trick of hers was definitely...impressive.

Good. [Said, perhaps, a little more gruffly than intended. He's hoping this guy here isn't lying about that, but he doesn't seem to detect any deception in his tone. So he's either telling the truth, or a very good liar.]

[He bristles again, though, as Hazama kept talking.] Oy oy oy... What do you mean, 'hitting it off'? Were you flirting with my Robin-chan? [Over-protective nakama is over-protective.]

She never spoke about being taken. Our personalities seemed to melt well, that's all. I could have foreseen a great friendship there if she was still around.

[Sanji huffed a little, but backed down a bit.] No.. I... We weren't... aren't... but she's still my special Robin-chwan, my nakama, and I'm not about to let some stranger just snoop around her with who-knows-what intentions!

[Intellectual, mysterious, teasing... Sanji could see, as much as he regretted it, how Robin might be interested, or at the least, amused, by this guy.]

[Sanji's shoulders droop at the mention of Robin no longer being in Nautilus, a gloom settling over him.] Robin-chwaaaaan.... to not have my beautiful, delicate flower here any more... Ahhh... Nautilus is such a bleaker place with the loss of her... [He straightened up, clasping his hands together, eyes shining brightly.] At least I get to bask in your glorious radience whenever I go home~! ♥
