Re: 2 - Voice
Furman's is quite useful, especially to new arrivals who haven't yet learned to Bend.
And I heard you introduce yourself as 'Mother', but assumed it was some sort of title, rather than a name. A title I'm reluctant to call you by without knowing the context it's taken from, because to be quite blunt, unless you happen to have green skin and gills, I can assure you that you're not my mother.
[Yes, he's clearly amused and teasing too.]
Re: 2 - Voice
"Bending, hm? Will definitely need some more dirt on that, when you have a chance, handsome."
[She chuckled.] "Well fair enough on that. Seeing as I'm not exactly swamped with calls at the moment, I see no reason I can't indulge ya. See, I'm part of the Space Legion, Omega Mob to be specific." [Yes, she was proud of that, yes it was called that for a very good reason. Her Captain just turned things around, was all. Made the worst band of misfits and miscreants into the most successful unit in Legion history.]
"Now in the Legion your past before enlistment is just that. The past. Unless you showboat around or call attention to yourself on the tri-vee, you're not much likely to get bit by it. It's a huge universe, after all. When you sign up, they say ya get three names. The name you had before you enlisted, the name you picked for yourself, and the name everyone calls ya. Well I chose to go by Rose when I first joined up, as in Rose-a-lie. And no, sorry, you're cute, but not cute enough to get my real name from me on the first date. And since we're not going on a date, you'll have to content to let your curiosity lie on that. Now for a while, the name others called me was Shrinkin Violet, but that was just till Big Daddy put me here in Comn Central. Well, here where I was, clearly not where I am now, which is a crying shame. Betcha all the stocks in my portfolio the food here won't be near half as good as the food we get in the mess from Escrima. Anyway, Big Daddy sets me up in Comn Central, something no other captain ever thought to try before writing me off as worthless."
"Well, anyhow, long story only somewhat shorter, First night out on the comns, Cap'n goes on down to the vending machine, proving once and for all the man actually does ever take a break for things like eating. Way he works, you'd never know it otherwise. Nearbout one or two in the morning, local, if I recall. And Just after he slips off, wouldn't you know it, Top - that's Top Sargent Brandy - calls in looking for him. Now I knew that Big Daddy had to try and pass out for at least a few hours, so I backed her off, and when she said she could handle herself, I stopped her flatter than dead. See, she'd been burning both ends of the same candle, near as I could see. So I hushed her up, sent her to bed. She called me Mother then and there. Well, Captain came on back, set Tusk up to do his reading, then headed off to beddy-bye. He called on in from his room and chatted with me, my back story more or less as a bedtime story, as he promised to slip off to dreamland right after. Near about the last thing he said to me as he went off the air, was to call me Mother. It stuck ever since. Oh, I'm sure a few of the kiddos here and there add the word Hen ta that when they think I can't hear them, but it's fine. I don't mind being the mother hen here and there. And besides, Mother... that's a name the team gave me that wasn't trying to tear me down, ya know?"
[A deep breath, and a smile that came through in her voice.] "Before the Captain, I'll tell ya, big green, we were a bunch of rejects no one wanted to deal with, we didn't like each other. Hey, most of us didn't like ourselves. But ever since the Captain got dumped in the swamp with the rest of us, guarding civvies one day a week in muck up to the neck, he made us a family. We watch out for each other, and a name from them? Yeah, you can call me Mother any day of the week. I'm not your mother, maybe, but Mother's my name, and it's becoming who I am. And for the first time in as long as I can remember, who I am is someone I quite like."
"So I guess the real question is... is who you are, someone you quite like?"
Re: 2 - Voice
And I'm glad that your group has found such a good leader... Mother.
[There's a slight hesitation before the name, as if calling someone that is strange.
But the next question gives him pause as he thinks seriously about the answer.]
...In all honesty, that isn't a question that I've ever been asked. Or one that I've really considered in such straightforward terms. There are certainly areas of my life and aspects of my personality that I know I could improve on, and I make an effort to do so. I'm reasonably content with the place I've found and made for myself in Nautilus, and am glad that I was brought here despite the circumstances that lead to it.
So yes, I suppose that I like who I am reasonably well.
Re: 2 - Voice
"It's a good question to ask.. of yourself and others there, handsome. And that is a good answer as well. i am still hoping to find a transport home lickety split, but for me home is as much who I became as a place."
Re: 2 - Voice
[Kit nodded.]
I'll take that under advisement. Though your concept of home is certainly one I can agree with.
Re: 2 - Voice
"Good to know there is at least one friendly voice out here on the airwaves till I find my ride back, then."
Re: 2 - Voice
[Kit smiles.]
I'm sure you'll find many more if you stay here for any length of time.
