Allow me to make a guess:
They would call me a monster. A murderer. And then they would try to hunt me down for justice--or, perhaps simply shun me. [He's noticed the city is not well united even in coming together when there are criminals. He has sincere doubts that they'd unite against him with any sort of cohesion.]
All of that is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible when they do not know who I am.

I am not certain why you would think a grudge would sway me one way or the other unless I were the one holding it.
