"Then what is it you care about? What taste falls upon the wind that is so subtle I cannot sample it?" He wasn't bragging. That was genuine curiosity, and he leaned more from his perch, hooking a leg a little around the pole.

"Small problems are easier to solve, good sir. They are far less intimidating. Big and important problems denote troubles and time spent agonizing about them. Much better for a strange situation thus to appear smaller."

That hand clapping tho.

"What vexes you, sir?"

"People."

It's a one-word answer to a question that is far too complex. But at the question of the wind, the Doctor offers a small smirk, his answer always comes back to one topic.

"Time."

But the Doctor is intrigued.

"Are you a philosopher, then?"

He like philosophy. Though, he's an existential crisis in progress. And focusing on the other man is better than thinking about yet more that he has lost himself.

"Then you find yourself in good company, I too am most concerned about people." In a sense, at least.

"Time vexes you? In what manner, sir? The passage of it? Or lack thereof, perhaps?"

Oops, but now he's distracted.

"I am a good many things, though I can but say I merely dabble in philosophy. In the sense I have one, and keep finding I must add to it. But is that not the point of living?"
not_the_question: Empress of Mars (confused)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Good. Distractions. Because for some reason the Doctor isn't as prepared to admit things to this stranger.

"Well, you have a philosophical mind. It's enough to start... The point of living... I do wonder. What would you say is the point of living when you're half the age of the universe itself?"

Literally.
acheat: (Swash that buckle)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Half the age of the universe is old indeed, my good sir. But can you admit to knowing and experiencing everything there is? Does nothing surprise you, do you not still wonder, still question things?

You are but half the age of the universe perhaps, but you cannot say you are the age of the universe, and in a universe so quickly changing, spinning, and growing with every moment, you will never catch up to it.

There will always be more to see and know, sir.

And therein lies the point of continuing."

"I don't fault you for your point of view. But they are limited in scope."

He sighs.

"I am used to traversing the whole of time and space."
acheat: (Default)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you?" He slipped a little further from his perch, now dangling from the pole.

"The whole of it now? If so you must know where I am from and what I am, for if it was the whole of time and space, it would encompass other times and spaces, would it not? Have you braved the cramped passages of the Underdark before, good sir? Have you explored the groves of elves? Have you ridden a dragon?"
not_the_question: Death in Heaven (salute)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor watches as the man comes lower. Good. Makes it easier to try to see the man's true intentions.

"I have my suspicions, but my abilities to comprehend such things are slightly crippled at the moment. And yes, I've travelled to other universes, other times, even the gaps between universes and times. Don't limit yourself to thinking elves only live in groves. There are whole planets of them. And yes, yes I have."

Wasn't a dragon in the Earth sense, but that's not the point, right?
acheat: (Knowledgable)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't correct me on elves sir, I am one." A type of one, at least.

"No... Have you ridden one... sir?" He will poke at this for hours. "I can elaborate of course, for I have ridden two, good sir. At the same time, more or less."

A thought.

"Or was it perhaps riding and being ridden? What in any case, could you profess to such exploits?"
not_the_question: Empress of Mars (confused)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"There are many kinds of elves. Which sort are you?"

Well, he volunteered the information. So the Doctor will challenge him right back. There is a small voice in the back of his head saying 'it's not a competition', but he cannot identify it. He pulls a curious and confused face, because where is that voice from? It's kind of toneless... like all the 'Clara-holes' in his memory.

"I've witnessed the same star being born and dying. I have no need to prove anything to you."

Which is both competing and not competing at the same time. At least he's trying.
acheat: (Swash that buckle)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
"If you indeed profess to having visited every corner of space and time, you'd know!"

No this was a competition. He was not as old or half as old as the universe itself. In comparison, Jarlaxle was a mere baby. But, he liked fun little competitions, and those ruby eyes lit up as he heard a challenge in there.

"So what you mean to tell me is that you've never once cupped a woman's breast in your hand and appreciated how well it rolled into your palm?"
not_the_question: Woman Who Lived Deleted Scene (disguise)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
"We've only just met and you're jumping straight to personal questions?"

Sheesh.

"Depends on the body."

There, that should confuse the elf.
acheat: (Default)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"What better way to get to know you personally?"

He finally hopped off the poke. No wonder he'd perched up high, he was rather small in comparison. Well built yes, but shorter than an average human man.

"Oh? And what would be the body you'd prefer? A large bust? Or something more apple sized? And if it were the latter, would you like a pear body or perhaps a stick?

Or if indeed if you prefer human form at all, and perhaps a mind like yours is only entertained with a form more complex?"

The drow struck a pose, laughing.

"Or perhaps your tastes include what is before you? Or all of them together! Regale me."
not_the_question: The Pilot (door)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 02:43 am (UTC)(link)

The Doctor is faceplaming so very hard right now. But it's only one-handed, because the other hand is still clapping.

"Not her body. Mine."

He sighs with exasperation.

"I'm remembering now why I don't spend a lot of time with your kind."

Being elf.

"What planet are you from?"

Because with his Time Sense gone, he can't even form hypotheses about such things now.
acheat: (Default)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
And Jarlaxle is watching it with rapt interest.

"Well then! Why did you not say so to begin with? Are you a shapeshifter then?"

Aw, don't be that way, Doctor.

"Tsk tsk, good sir. We're all quite delightful. ... Well most of us on the surface at least, but the matrons of the Underdark are trying."

Welp.

"An interesting question. I fear I'm not entirely clear on a planet." Which might answer the technology age question.
not_the_question: Into the Dalek (thumb biting)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"In a manner of speaking."

It's easier to just let people interpret it how they will.

"See, it's what is below the surface that I get to rather quickly, so you'll have to excuse me if I don't believe you."

The doctor shrugs.

"I've heard that before."

And basically that means the Doctor now wins. Because of course it was a competition.
acheat: (Default)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Then what is it directly speaking?"

No, he wanted the truth!

"You cannot base me on the antics of my people, good sir. There are many who would find me terribly trustworthy."

A white brow arches.

"Heard what? The admittance of ignorance to planets? If that is the case, educate me, so that it may be fixed. If it is merely a statement that you have, in fact, heard any admittance about ignorance, then congratulations, as have we all."

Meaning no u dont beetch.
not_the_question: Under the Lake (TARDIS Care)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"It is beyond your comprehension, so 'manner of speaking' is close enough for you."

Because, it was the truth. Just not the truth the way the Elf wanted it.

"I don't know you yet. And right now, I only have your own word to go by that you are trustworthy."

And that isn't enough. Even Missy is capable of saying she is trustworthy.

"No... That a person didn't know what planet they were from. Last time that happened, I was looking for a bookshop and found myself in the middle of a war facing my arch-enemy as a child."

Davros. Good times, those were. Only not.
acheat: (Swash that buckle)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"How would you know unless you attempted to describe it? You seem to believe me dim, sir. It cuts me to my core."

Look, no harm in trying, right?

"Then I shall talk at you or with you until you feel you have grasped my character, good sir." Oh... Oh dear lord..

"Now... that sounds like a story that should be told. How did things go so awry as to end with this? I presume then you won, unless you managed to turn back time upon your dying breath to save yourself."
not_the_question: Into the Dalek (thumb biting)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Because I've met your kind before.... And because I know you're more interested in proving yourself to me than I am in proving myself to you."

And that's just going based on the things the elf has said so far.

"The Story has been told often enough. And being a Time Lord, folding Time back on itself is a parlour trick."

Well... yes, pretty much.
acheat: (Default)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
He spreads his arms. "I am genuinely curious. You are a being of which I've never encountered, no one where I hale can admit to meeting a being half the age of the universe, not even dragons tarry that long in this world. That is the place of Gods, sir. What I do or do not prove takes backseat to the expansion of my experiences."

But yeah he likes people to think he's impressive too.

"A Time Lord then. We are finally arriving somewhere. It sounds more as a title than a race sir, would this be the case? It is a grand title if so."
not_the_question: Mummy on the Orient Express (headrest)

[personal profile] not_the_question 2016-09-10 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, then get used to disappointment."

The Doctor owes no one at this point in his life. But nice try.

"It is my species. It's a bit of a title as well, I suppose, but I've never been one to care about titles beyond my name."

He's not a typical Time Lord. Probably it's why he's still alive.

"What kind of elf are you? In the name of exchanging information, of course."
acheat: (Swash that buckle)

[personal profile] acheat 2016-09-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"So stingy, sir." He'd get it eventually.

"And what is your name then? Since we've gotten this far without use of them? Or is this to be beyond my meager understanding as well?"

Look, he's very interested, you've given him so many fascinating details.

"In the name of exchanging information? Why would I give it, if you've given me so little? Should I just not tell you to get used to disappointment?"
