Her head? What is wrong with her head? Why would she have piercing pain? ... and why the bloody hell would it feel like exploding? Her face alone says that she thinks he is bonkers, but in case he can't pick that up. "Fine. No. No. And the the heck is that relevant to you? And what do you mean? Exploding? Why would my head be exploding? Do you know something? Does my head explode?"

He chuckles softly and holds his arms up to ward her off from hitting him.

"I... Had to be sure. Please. Answer the last question: where was the last place you travelled with the Doctor?"

"Are you planning on exploding my head? Because I will have something to say about that." Eyes narrowing at him, although with a huff, she shrugs her shoulders. How to say something without saying too much. "Well. Let's see. I had just become trapped in the TARDIS on the Crucible."

That should cover it.

He grins at that. No, really. Because that meant Donna had see him start to change, had heard Jack's explanation.

"Oh, Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna! I'd never explode this beautiful, intelligent mind of yours."

Wipe her memories to stop it exploding, yes, but not make it explode. He looks like he might hug her and then stops. He's not a hugger now.

"So, remember how Jack said I was going to change and I didn't? I did later. It's me! I'm the Doctor. And I have this face because of you!"

And he sounds entirely too pleased with himself for that whole explanation.

Her expression turns toward annoyance, thinking that he is mocking her. Donna will admit that she is some things, like stubborn, brash and loud, but never that. No, never that.

Yet when he starts to speak again, it takes a moment to register the I part. Her brow furrows and her mouth opens, although it closes again, perplexed and confused, and had she heard that right? But... But...

And oh. Oh, he sounds far too happy. And her eyes narrow. "You- You- what? You just decided hey, let's steal this guy's look and his body, and then prance around pretending to be him?"

"No, no, no, no! It wasn't like that. It just sort of happened."

He takes a breath, has to calm himself down and explain it properly.

"Time Lords, we change when we're about to die. Every cell in our body renews itself. But it means we come out looking... different. New body, new-ish personality. I'm from hundreds of years in your future, so I had to make sure I wasn't going to hurt you with knowing it was me. So, I pretended to be him until I knew you'd be safe knowing it was me."

Spoilers, all of it. Sort of.

"Anyway. I have this face to remind me what you said: 'I don't have to save the whole town, just save someone.'"

See Donna, you're important to the Doctor hundreds of years after he leaves you. You're that important.

And now he's grinning like a loon.

Just sort of happened. How the bloody hell does that thing just sort of happen? Tripping over your shoe laces just sort of happens. Taking on the face of someone you helped save?

She remembers Jack holding her back, and how the Doctor had said he didn't need to change, how he has siphoned off the energy in to his hand (which will never stop being strange). "You're a Time Lord."

He travels through time. He can be a million years ahead of her, and he could still pop in for a cup of tea and gossip if he wants. Although, wait- wait. Back it up. "My head is going to explode one day from knowing you?!"

Maybe later, once she gets over all of it, the last part will sink in. But for now, the whole head exploding part is what Donna is stuck on.

The Doctor grins along as she seems to be getting in and falls as she gets stuck on the 'explode' bit. Oh. Oops.

"Don't mind that. I stop it from happening. We've always said we were best friends and I protect my friends. You'll be safe and fine and happy."

He makes sure of it.

Stopping it from happening still means that there is a time when Donna's head is going to explode. A time where she thinks it is going to explode. She almost asks how it happens, and it is on the tip of her tongue, but she does know better. Even if she gets an answer, it likely won't be a straight forward one.

And, yes, his words do mean something. In fact her shoulders drop and that uppity expression shifts. "Good, or I'd be making your head explode right now."

He offers a small smirk.

"That's more like it. So... How did you end up here?"

Because clearly it's now sorted who they are, time to move on to bigger and more important questions.

She tries to keep her expression stern, although his smirk is infectious, and her own smile follows. "You're impossible, you know. Simply impossible."

Donna shook her head though. "If I knew that, I'd have left the same way I came."

"I get the 'impossible' thing a lot."

Though, these days, he doesn't use it often. Killing himself over 230 billion times tends to have that effect.

He nods once. "We will figure it out and get everyone home...."

Because isn't that what the Doctor does? 'We'... he hopes Donna will join him. He's missed her more than he could ever admit.

"Why am I not surprised to hear that." And she isn't. Impossible, but he had also been her best friend.

Which, this is strange. He hadn't changed before, and somewhere along the line, he has. Had she been there for it? She doesn't ask, but she does look to him. "If anyone can, you can."

"Because, back in those days, you were one of the very few people who took the time to get to know me... really know me."

To be fair, a lot of that was because Rose and Martha had been so much younger than Donna. Donna's age and frankly being a temp, had given her a lot of wisdom in how to deal with people in general and him specifically.

He smiles softly at her encouragement. "You stayed, even after Midnight... I thought if there was one thing that would have made you want to leave me forever, it would have been the after-effects of that."

A telepath having his mind ravaged? Took weeks to set it right again.

"I never thanked you properly for staying...."

And that's about as close as he'll get to saying it now. The place he's at now, emotionally, isn't all that different. The clapping has been steady this entire time. And he realises he's been doing it...

"I'm not sure I can this time. My Time Sense is... gone."
foronemoment: (it's alright)

[personal profile] foronemoment 2016-09-14 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's clear that she finds that surprising. How can you travel around with someone and not get to know them? Under normal circumstances, you would, and traveling with the Doctor had been anything but normal. Then again, Donna can be nosy and intrusive and intuitive. She isn't one to let something go.

She had left him once, and that one time had been enough to show her the error of her ways. That slight twist of her lips is giving in reply. "Never. I mean it. The Doctor and Donna, traveling the galaxy, together, always."

After all she has seen, how could she just go back to that normal boring life, always missing everything? No, her eyes had opened. Yet he is doing a good job at surprising her, and she gives a small wave of her hand. "You never needed to thank me, dumbo."

If anything, it is Donna that should be thanking him. Yet that cast of her eyes falls on his hand now. "Doctor...?"

The Doctor somehow manages to look stern and sheepish at the same time. Must be the eyebrows. She had always been quick to accept him as an alien. Which was just another difference between her and his recent companions. And he loved her all the more for it.

"I do, Donna."

Because thanking her isn't enough. He follows her glance and shakes his head.

"It's gone. Can't feel it, can't taste it. I'm.... blind to time."

He almost said he was too human for his liking.
