"The light can be as blinding as the darkness. Maybe you would do well to remember that before you judge," Ren said defensively.

Somehow he appeared to be leaning back away from her as she stepped forward. He wasn't afraid of her but in some way she was intimidating. There was an untapped power he knew was within her.

"Briefly, maybe, but not always. Your eyes adjust." Rey stopped a few feet from him, "In the pitch black, you have no chance. Do you not see that? If there is any...any...good in you, you will lose it."

Han wouldn't want that. Leia wouldn't either.

Ren's eyes searched her face. What was she trying to do? Her tone reminded him of Han, attempting to draw his son back to the Light. To come home. Doubt crept in. Here he had been trying to find a balance between the two sides, but she wasn't to know that. She'd only just arrived. So what did she think she was doing?

Abruptly, he was concerned it was a ruse; a trick to have him let his guard down and he quickly backed away from her.

He tried to change the subject, away from himself.

"You... you need to be told what this place is. You cannot easily leave although it is possible. You have to adjust. You have to change."

He appeared bothered now; unsettled. Even as he covered it up with words.

Rey had nothing to gain or lose - truly - besides her life no matter what he chose. The Light would do him good and his powers would help to shut the First Order down. Many lives would be saved and Leia's heart would surely - hopefully - begin to mend. Rey would honestly like to see that. The General deserved no less.

"Do you always avoid topics you don't like?" she retorted, sounding more petulant than she had intended, "Breathe..."

The last word might have been for him or herself. Breathing had been helpful for her in calming her body and her mind. Kylo Ren seemed like he needed such a technique.

"Your powers react to your emotions. If you can calm your body, you can calm your mind."

Who was the teacher?

There was another frown.

"Are you trying to instruct me now? As if there are not enough Jedi around here already, offering their expertise," he hadn't thought about it before he mentioned Jedi to her... but he was rattled.

And he was still avoiding the other topics.

"You need someone to help you calm down." she wasn't going to apologize, "Maybe you should listen to them." her lips pursed, "You only mentioned Darth Vader. What Jedi are here?"

Luke? Oh please say Luke. She touched her bag, drawing confidence from the lightsaber within.

But he shook his head.

"Probably names you do not know so what would be the point to list them? As for listening to them, you will find that many things are different here. I have trained with some of them. I live among them, at the Temple."

Well, some of them. Not all of the Jedi live at the Air Temple or in the East.

But he thought his words may again be distracting enough to steer the conversation away from him personally.

"How do you know I don't know them?" her brows rose, "Are you telling me that they are happy training with you while you take advice from Darth Vader?"

There seemed to be a conflict of interests there - unless, of course, he wasn't telling them the truth. Rey knew it was silly to be disappointed, but she knew she would be if that was the case.

"Tell me their names. I'm happy to meet any Jedi." she had a slight hero complex when it came to them - yet it was nothing to how he felt about his grandfather.

"No. I am sure you will meet them soon enough," he stubbornly replied.

"I told you. Things are different here. The Jedi protect Darth Vader." Well, one Jedi in particular. He still was uncertain about how close Obi-Wan and his grandfather were. It seemed to be very complicated. "I rarely see him myself."

Plus he currently looked like Anakin Skywalker, but he didn't add that for the moment.

"Why are you so stubborn?" but she had a feeling she knew why. Though she had Force abilities, he still was only talking to a Scavenger. The way he had said that before had left a sour taste in her mouth.

"They wouldn't!" that went against all she knew about the Jedi; in fact, it was downright offensive, "He's a Sith. They wouldn't protect a Sith."

With her hands balled into fists, Rey seemed to consider giving him a good punch. While that might feel good in the moment, it wouldn't be worth it once he lashed out.

He noticed her tension and gave a small shake of his head as if in warning. If she tried anything he knew he could stop a blow easily with his fully restored Force powers.

"You have a lot to learn. Follow me," and he turned as if expecting her to simply obey and do as he said.

"I don't trust you." and that was a huge problem. Her feet stayed planted, stubbornly. If he could be hard-headed, so could she.

"Do you even know my name?" because she had one. She wasn't just Scavenger.

The question caused him to halt and look back. Did he know her name? Perhaps it was something that had filtered through when he'd probed her mind what seemed like a long time ago... But names had been unimportant then.

Straightening up as he turned to face her again, he looked a little annoyed.

"Does that matter?"

It wasn't really a yes or a no.

"To me it does. I am a person, Kylo Ren." and since she knew his name, it only seemed fair, "My name is Rey. I am...I was...a Scavenger, but I only did that because I had no other choice."

On Jakku, you either Scavenged or starved. The options were few unless you wanted to turn into a thief.

"I'm also a talented pilot and I know a lot about ships. That's why your father, more or less, left me his ship and Chewbacca with it."

"Have you finished boasting?" Now he had tensed up.

He didn't like that she seemed to be getting everything that he thought should be his by family rights - the ship, such as it was; that lightsaber she had stashed away; maybe even his father and Chewbacca's respect. Everything felt backwards as if he should be in her place.

He didn't understand that he could have been in her place. Rey wouldn't have pushed him aside. She wasn't the enemy; the enemy was in himself.

"I was only telling you the truth."

For what it was worth, she moved to follow him. She liked him better when he showed some humanity.

"The important part was my name anyway." though she hoped he didn't ask for a surname. She didn't know it.

He didn't ask. He could tell himself that he didn't care - but it wasn't entirely the truth. He just didn't think it was an important extra fact to know at this moment.

"Congratulations," he said wryly. "You have a name. Can we move on now?"

"I'd rather you say it or use it once." she chose to stand at his side rather than behind him, arching a brow in his direction, "It's really very simple. I only have the one."

Raising his eyebrows back at her, he looked somewhat incredulous at her persistence as they walked.

"What are you trying to do? Make friends?"

Why did it seem everyone who didn't mock him wanted to try to befriend him? This confused him and it was even more bewildering coming from Rey. He wasn't sure what aim she had in getting him to call her by name. He was suspicious of her motives.

Persistent. Stubborn. Fiercely independent. Yes, Rey was all those qualities and far more.

"With you?" she frowned at him as if he was off his rocker. Well, more off his rocker. They were both likely deserving of that descriptor, which just meant she should be good at recognizing it, right?

"It's called being polite to another human being. We have names. We say hello and good-bye. We don't wear masks and hunt each other down."
