She did have a point. Sometimes letters like this were written to get a feeling off of their chests, sometimes it was never meant to be sent, but a reply could totally be expected, wanted, hoped for. It would be disappointing to hear this answer, but it was kinder to give them an answer instead of let it sit and gather dust.
