Aww! Someone is leaving you notes in your locker or sending flowers mysteriously while you’re at work. Isn’t that just so sweet and cliché? Well, this cliché is so beloved for a reason: everyone loves the idea that there is someone out there who loves them.

So, do you know who it is? Is this with glee or dread? Is there amazing poetry there? Or has someone just gushed a novel’s worth of their admiration for you? Is it kind of creepy? Hurry up and open it already!

1. POETRY ❥ It’s so lovely~ and embarrassing having someone give you a secret love letter. A good kind of embarrassing. Who is it from? Can you guess correctly?

2. HIT AND MISS ❥ You are trying to send a love letter to someone, but it keeps missing them! They don’t see it in their locker. It gets thrown away in the pile of papers on their desk… something is just preventing you from giving it to them indirectly!

3. FORGOT THEIR NAME ❥ You didn’t mean to leave it unsigned, really, but now that they have it, the game is afoot! Will you let them know right away, or will you wait until you two can get some alone time away from everyone else?

4. STOLE THE CREDIT ❥ Either you are the worst jerk in the world for saying you wrote some amazing poetry when you can’t even spell, or you really need to work on growing a backbone and fight for your true love’s hand.

5. DELIVERY BOY ❥ You’re just the messenger, and sometimes, that can be dangerous. Will someone see you leaving the letter? Will they think it was you? What if the recipient wants it to be you and not the person who originally wrote it? Uh-oh.

6. WRONG PERSON ❥ Oh god. Somehow, the letter got to the wrong person. How heartbreaking is it when you find out that someone doesn’t secretly love you? Or how horrifying is it when you discover your letter missed your love by a mile?

7. REVEALED ❥ No, you didn’t write the letter. You swear! That is not your handwriting and the person on the security is not you. Nope, not in a million years.

8. MYSTERIOUS GIFTS ❥ Someone is leaving gifts in random places. Are you the giver? How do you know this person so well? Or are you the one getting all of these gifts and find it wonderfully sweet? Or kind of creepy?

9. NOT POSSIBLE ❥ There is no way that you could have a secret admirer. For whatever reason, everyone hates you or you’re absolutely unloveable. Come on, you have to be realistic here. You don’t have time for illusions of love.

10. UNINTENDED ❥ You never meant to send the letter. Oh, you’re feelings are true, but you wanted to gather enough courage to someday ask them out! You just needed an outlet for your feelings, and now here they are, out in the open!

11. FRIENDS DISCOVER ❥ Friends can be the best or the worst in matters like these. Did they catch you writing one? How cheesy is it? Do they know who it is? Do they bug you for hours trying to guess? Or will they help you gather up courage to say these things to the person instead of just leaving an anonymous letter?

12. PRANK ❥ It is a horrible thing to do, but sometimes, leading people on can be so much fun. Their pain, their disappointment… Of course, not all pranks are successful. Do they fall for it? Are they really in love with that one person? Or is the person you’re writing a letter in the name of really in love with your intended victim?

13. OBSESSION ❥ Okay, you can totally understand someone being embarrassed by a love letter. But crept out? You just admitting your everlasting devotion, how you want to marry them, have their children, and how you watch them every second you can and put a tracking device in their shoulder!

14. FROM YEARS AGO ❥ Sometimes love letters are never sent, and it can be a bit nostalgic. Did you ever get together? Is your current lover jealous? Or is it something from fifth grade that you all can giggle and laugh about?

Jane remembered when she was a teenager and she had all those awkward crushes.

But then she came by to visit Connie, she was not expecting to find a note on her doorstep.

"Hey, Connie," she called, opening the door. "I found a note for you!"

"A what?" Connie was deep into Techniques in Tai Chi, scribbling some new movements for her training, when Jane had entered the room with a note. "Who would write ME a note?"

"No idea," Jane replied, looking over the note. She didn't recognize the handwriting, at least. "Could be a gift from the city or something."

[connie_maheswaran]

"A gift from the city." Connie looked dubious. "I'm not sure why they would want to handwrite me a note, but I guess I'm...oh!" Connie had gotten a look at the writing inside: loopy script, expressive words, a tell tale envelope. The pot had just gotten thicker. "Dearest Connie," the girl began, reddening. "You made me free simply breathtaking since out first meeting. I have never met a girl with such articulation and wit, an eagerness to..." Connie trailed off. "Yep. It's a love letter."

Jane couldn't help but giggle. Someone had gone all out on the letter, flowery words and all!

"Does it have a name? Or is it anonymous?"

Connie flipped the envelope over a few times, analyzing it a little before finally placing it on the table. "Nothing actually. And there's far too much a sample space for the Nautilus to check properly."

"Hmm. Are there any other clues as to where it came from?"

[connie_maheswaran]

Connie shook her head. "It's hard to tell. Even the writing makes it hard to figure out if its a boy or girl." She reddened. "Not that it matters, since boy or girl, love letters are potential embarrassment unless reciprocated. I mean, I'm sure you've had your fair share of love letters, right?"

[Jane snorts.]

No, not really. I was usually too busy with black holes and far-off galaxies to notice what was happening back on Earth.

But there's gotta be some sort of clue, right? Or maybe the City is just sending out compliments and someone got poetic.

[connie_maheswaran]

Hmm. [Connie took the letter, staring at it a moment before chuckling. "So this is what it feels like to be like Garnet. Spoken for."

[Jane smiles, remembering her feeling for Steven.]

Well, you don't have to answer it. Sometimes people dread getting an answer for these things.

[connie_maheswaran]

"I wouldn't do that," Connie said, shaking her head, "no matter how surprised I am. Any letter nowadays takes though and intentions in them, and something like this, it deserves to have an answer." Connie didn't love the idea of disappointing someone, but she hardly had a choice. "You just have to be eloquent but firm about stuff like this. Oh, and you have to make your answer clear, otherwise it can lead to some major misunderstandings."

Jamie came to mind.

Jane thought for a moment on that.

She did have a point. Sometimes letters like this were written to get a feeling off of their chests, sometimes it was never meant to be sent, but a reply could totally be expected, wanted, hoped for. It would be disappointing to hear this answer, but it was kinder to give them an answer instead of let it sit and gather dust.

"Eloquent. I've never had that skill, but something tells me that if anyone can make a rejection letter that makes someone feel better at the end of it, it would be you."

Connie chuckled. "Actually, I did write a rejection letter once! I did my best to be forthright and sincere too. It was my first time, and actually, it was supposed to be for someone else, Steven's 'friend' Garnet. See, Garnet was ultimately spoken for, and she wanted nothing to do with dating anyone else. I tried to soften the blow with a letter, but it ended up somehow attracting the intended more, and then he had to be rejected by Garnet in the rain." She sighed. "I felt so bad about it later, but luckily Garnet had a talk with him and made him understand what was at stake when one "fell" in love. Believe me, I learned something important that day! It's sort of why I can't explore a date with this person."
