"It's a chaos storm. The city has them... once a month, maybe? Lots of people have changed personalities. But they'll be back to normal in a few days, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Her hands were still balled on her hips, but as she looked at him, his reaction seemed more and more puffed-up. Like those fish in the stories, who blew themselves up when someone disturbed them. His behavior was still bad, of course, but when she though about it a little pity bled through her irritation.

"No one. That doesn't mean I shouldn't offer it. Now would you like to know what's going on, or should I go away and leave you to wonder?"

“If it’s a storm, can’t they just stay out of it?” He was still not fully getting the concept. Although something about the chaos storm’s description reminded him of the illusionist, Caldina. When she put someone into a trance with her magic she could make them do whatever she wanted, even if it was counter to their normal wishes. “Did you ever think that there might be someone behind these chaos storms?” Seemed plausible to him.

Unaware of her assessment of him, as accurate as it was, he finally let his guard down a little.

“If you’ve got something to say then say it. What else is there to know about this place?”

"No. It's- it's not magic, Chaos, but it's like magic. And creation, and potential, all bound together. But we're at the heart of that Chaos in Nautilus. It's how so many people from different worlds pass though here. But that power runs wild. You don't get a choice about whether you're affected or not. And sometimes you don't even know you're affected. You think you've always been a pony, or a school child."

Or, say, an eleven-year-old girl rather than an eighteen-year-old.

"Nautilus is a place of Change. You were Called here; everyone in the city was Called here too. You heard a voice telling you to wake up, didn't you? That was the city."

"Then what is it?" Ascot replied dubiously. It sure sounded like magic to him, besides how could any world exist without magic? Clearly, he's never been to Autozam which is another world near his that is all about science and technology. "A pony?" Wait. We can actually become creatures here? He's debating whether that's a pro or a con.

"Yeah I heard that voice, what of it?" He listened as she explained but all of this was pretty convoluted. "A city that can talk...." Sure, he could believe that. There were stranger things but her explanations were never going to be satisfactory for him. Any explanation that left out the 'how do I get out of here' would.

"Okay, so it's the city of change... but why?"

"Chaos is an energy. It's everywhere, but in other places it's settled into patterns- been made into worlds. Magic works for one world, but it doesn't work here because it only belongs to one world."

Sadly there was no good way to get out. It theoretically worked, but most newcomers couldn't manage it- and then there were consequences once you got back.

"The city wanted you here, so it called you out of your world and into this one. You can learn to change things here, through Bending. You can even get most of your old powers back, if you work hard enough. But you're here to change things, and to be changed. Sometimes. When the city feels like it."

Thus, the technicolor ponies. And the girl talking to Ascot.
