November & December Test Drive Meme

It was one of the times when Adela was walking along the beaches in the Eastern District. Even if it was cold out, there was just something calming about the ocean, and she needed that after the previous storm.

After a moment she looked ahead, pausing as she spotted the man. A little closer and she could hear the soft words, and her curiosity got the better of her as the petite red head cleared her throat to try and get his attention.

"Someone you are seeking out here, sir?" Adela asked, genuinely curious about the man's words and the princess clearly in the thoughts behind them.

At any other time the being near the beach might have been soothing. He had often walked along the peaceful shores of the beaches of Cephiro... sometimes even with her at his side. This world had nothing to offer him and soon even his Cephiro, if it survived at all, would have lost all value. She would have died.

Zagato turned and for just a moment the flash of red hair put him on guard. Fortunately this small girl was not the same fiery red head he had encountered before.

"No. Princess Emeraude would never leave Cephiro."

Not alive anyway...

"What is this world?"

"Perhaps not, but such a choice would be in her hands should she hear the call to wake -- as you have."

She seemed relatively relaxed, unafraid of the man before her but seeming to come to a realization as he spoke. It only took her a moment more to begin answering, "It is Nautilus. It is a little difficult to explain, but... From what I understand of it, this is a sort of center of all worlds, a place to wake up from the dreams of our homes?"

After a beat she sighed at herself, fully aware of just how ridiculous it sounded when she said it like that, "I wish I knew a better way to put it than that, but there are those here far more suited to explain what Nautilus is than I. You are here because you heard and answered the call to wake, is that not so?"

The dreams of our worlds... this phrase stuck with him as she continued to speak and he thought back over the night's events. Cephiro had been crumbling around them when he had faced off against the Magic Knights, but their wills had been stronger than his... that was when the beam from their final attack had struck, blinding him, and then...

'Wake'

"There was a voice," So he admitted and obviously he had answered it for here he stood.

This wasn't death then? Some small part of him wished it was for when the Princess finally died they would be together again. Was he to be denied even that? He didn't question her words though. Some how they felt real enough.

"For what purpose are we brought to this center of all worlds?"

"From what I have been told and have seen, it is to learn the ability to bend -- the ability to change reality. Such power is to keep each world on its intended course, though... It would be more accurate to say this is what Nautilus encourages that you do. Truthfully, you can live however you like here while learning to bend, and you do not even need to learn it at all should you not wish too -- enough here would provide you with food and shelter of their own volition if you did not wish to."

Adela took a moment to bend an apple into existence then, allowing it to appear in her hand before she gently tossed it for Zagato to catch, "If you wish to learn, things that are easily recognized would be the best place to start, such as food. It can take some time to be skilled enough to regain abilities you had before, depending on how easily bending comes to you. It is good for you to at least know of it regardless, considering that you may be here a while."

Reflexively he caught the apple... which he regarded as a strange otherworldly fruit or maybe a vegetable of some sort, and held onto it.

To him 'bending' appeared to work very much like the magic of Cephiro. If you wish for something to be then will it and it will appear. Obviously this world worked some what differently than his however since his magic was incompatible with theirs.

"Who is the Pillar of this world?"

"The what?" She asked, pausing and seeming a little thrown off by the question, "I... I am afraid I do not know just what you mean by that, sir."

Certainly there were several pillars in the buildings in Nautilus, but she had the impression that those weren't what the man before her was referring to. It made her wonder why he would ask, however...

"The Pillar of the World."

He repeated the phrase again thinking she had simply misunderstood but when her puzzled expression did not morph into one of understanding he, equally puzzled, began to consider other possibilities.

"The magic of this world does not come from a Pillar, one who prays for the safety of this world?"

"No one."

Adela shook her head, still not quite understanding what he meant but trying to see if it was perhaps something she wasn't meant to understand then and there, "There is no such being, not who would have such power as to make such prayer a reality. The closest thing to that would be Nautilus itself, and... It does not always keep us safe. It may offer protections and kindness, but by the same coin it offers mischief and dangerous trials. It, at one point, was like any of us, but it ascended into a greater being and became what it is. Its ability to bend the world is greater than anyone wakened's as a result."

A beat, and she added, "So far as I know, however, it is not the source of our ability to bend. It is something everyone inherently has and is a skill that needs to be mastered, like any other. It is certainly powerful enough to temporarily weaken or disable our bending among other things, but it cannot remove the ability permanently."

A world without a Pillar! This wonderfully bittersweet news was as exciting as it was envious. How he wished Cephiro had been able to survive without the sacrifice of the Pillar. Zagato became so deeply lost in thought over this that he went silent on his host of encyclopedic knowledge about Nautilus for several minutes, well long enough for a certain awkwardness to arise between them.

He hardly seemed bothered by it though, she had just given him a great deal to think about.

"... Sir?"

For some time she was quiet, trying to let him absorb the news she was giving him for the moment. It must have been shocking, if only because it was apparently that much different from his world. Whatever a pillar was, it must have been quite important.

Still, it was too long in silence for her tastes, so she broke it to try and get his attention again while stepping just a little closer, "Is... Is there something wrong?"

Tilting his head as she moved closer he leveled a stare at her that would melt most subordinates, though in her case the action was some what misplaced. She hadn't done anything but interrupt his thoughts. But... he also wasn't the sort to apologize for his actions so he just let the matter slide as if it hadn't happened.

"Finding a world without a Pillar is... surprising."

He admitted to that much but it was MUCH more than merely surprising. He knew of a few worlds and none of them had Pillars, but he had never actually been able to travel to any of them. This was a new experience in so many ways.

"If this world can call others to it could it be directed to target some one specifically?"

He didn't have to glare at her. Adela couldn't help her own frown growing as he gave her that look, and she straightened a little with it. It didn't last however, if only because of his question. The expression that replaced it wasn't pleasant, however.

"I... Would not know for certain, but I would lean towards there not being a way. Not that those who live here know of. I know of some who would have been called here long ago were that the case."

Adela took a moment to breathe, trying to calm herself rather than betraying too much emotion, "I... I know not what comfort this would give, but those of the same world can appear. It seems random, who will arrive from the same world and who will not, but if you can arrive here then there is a chance others of your world will in time. That is all I can say with any certainty."

He didn’t mean to upset her but now that it had been done he did what he did best... and said nothing about it. Really if the man would share his feelings occasionally little misunderstandings like this might not happen to him so often. It was clear that she too had lost someone important to her.

But instead he glided past her, thinking it best to move on and continue his search through this city. After all...

“I do not have the luxury of time.”

"You have more time than you think."

Adela was quick to correct him, not pausing for long before she continued to explain, "A friend of mine returned home from here before awakening again. According to him, it was like he had never left in the first place -- meaning that it is safe to assume time is frozen where you are from."

Zagato only made it a few paces away from Adela before she shared that, likely the single most important piece of information she had given him. Zagato immediately halted in his tracks and despite trying to school himself not to his heart caught in his throat.

Time... froze...

"The she would still be alive. The Magic Knights will be unable to complete their mission."

What in the world was he talking about? She raised a brow at him, tilting her head inquisitively but honestly not expecting him to explain.

"I suppose not? I would not know, knowing nothing of your world or those in it."

Her gaze went back to the ocean, and she tried to relax more before speaking almost boredly, "Regardless, I can show you to one of the welcome houses if you like. There is more information there, and there are plenty who know more that would answer your every question should you wish for it. As for me... I think I should return home for the day."

He blinked at the girl tilting her head at him. Oh right…had he been speaking aloud to himself again? He really needed to watch that, he was usually so much more cautious.

Zagato considered explaining at least some of the situation to her since she had answered so many of his questions but if she needed to return to her home he wouldn’t delay her any further.

“I can find my own way from here.”

Thank you. He really should have said that outloud but… again, stoic secretive with emotions kind of guy that he is he didn’t bother.

"Then I wish you luck."

Adela nodded before making to head on her way. It seemed like the lack of verbal gratitude didn't bother her at least, and honestly? His business was his own.

A part of her truly did hope that he found whatever he was looking for, or if he could at least find something worthwhile in Nautilus while he was there. But, at least for the time being, it was out of her hands.
