Pearl didn't take his hand, in part because she still needed some feeling of self-reliance, and in part because of her general reservations with (what she assumed was) a human. Still, she was ready to take him up on his offer, too overwhelmed to bother explaining that she wouldn't be eating anything.

"Thank you, Aden. I appreciate the - " Information, she'd been intending to say, but his question caught her off guard. "...Why, yes, I am. Are you, though?"

Because this man looked like he came from a time on Earth far too early to know about that.

"I wasn't 'till I came here. But there were creatures from outer space, once. At the mill." He makes a face. "At least, that's what the man in the velvet coat said they were. They could change themselves to look like whatever they wanted."

He shakes his head. "But that was there, and this is here, which is ... different. They say it's another dimension, which I'm still not really understanding much. But there's all kind of queer things going on: no money, everyone makes things with their minds out of some sort of ... chaos energy? It's all still mostly Greek to me."

It wasn't, actually, of course, but it was astounding how much you could find out about someone by pretending you weren't as smart as them.

Pearl listened, following along and nodding slowly. She pulls a face of her own at the mention of everyone making things with their mind, because everyone having access to something like that sounds like a terrible idea, but she'd have to get back to that.

"You know, it really is remarkable, some of the new situations I've seen you humans adapt to... I think you'll be alright," she offered, along with a small smile. But, again, moving on... "You're from Earth, I assume? Well... Your dimension's Earth, if that's... What's going on here..."

This was, admittedly, getting a bit confusing - which made Pearl quite susceptible to the man's act. "I've lived on Earth for hundreds of years, myself, but I'm from a different planet back in my dimension - as you can probably guess, I'm not exactly human."

"Most people here just say Earth and don't bother figuring out which dimension. That helps. There's enough in common that it isn't a problem, I suppose."

He tucks his hand into his pocket and pulls out a silver fobwatch, the cover etched with intricate lines and circles, and pops it open to check the time. The inside is just as intricate ... maybe a little fancy for someone dressed the way he is.

"Wherever you're actually from ... it's not all humans here. I talked to a dragon for a little while the other day. And a six-inch-tall man. ... And an automobile. So don't worry too much about sticking out."
