You and I find ourselves in similar circumstances then. I've barely been here the day.

[As much as he's traveled, managed to hold his own, it's a reassurance to have one of his old teachers to rely on if he needs.]

I don't suppose you've learned anything interesting yet?

[Really, Newt would much prefer to disregard mad science, considering his job as a magizoologist. And a wizard.]

W-well I usually consider if their species occurs in nature. If they haven't undergone any type of... intense tampering by humankind. [So no specialized breeding.] I'm not sure I understand what 'Spark' is though.

"I'm not sure if you could find any animals on my world that would count, then, if you consider Sparks in with humans."

[And yet again, the question of what is a Spark. Somehow explaining it never got easier.]

"Sparks are people like me. As far as we know we used to be Human. If we weren't, you would think there would be some way to tell who would manifest as a Spark and who wouldn't. But if someone is a Spark they Breakthrough, generally in their early teens, sometimes even younger. Breaking through...." [No, not any easier.] "Many Sparks don't survive breaking through.... Either their first project kills them, or they create an explosion they can't survive. But those who make it settle into their Sparkiness. Increased adrenal activity, some obvious and unobvious shifts in the brain, enhanced strength, reduced need for sleep, and of course a genius and mania both for science. And of course there is the madness place, the mood swings, the minions... "

Zelda. What a unique name. Fitting though. And much better than Newton by a mile.

"Pleased to meet you, Miss Zelda." Her point on names stands and he can't help a bit of inward amusement. "It makes me think of the sea. I've sailed a few times. Usually like enjoying my trips rather than just ending up somewhere though."

Awkward as he is, he opts not to answer that question. Never mind that it's undoubtedly meant to be rhetorical. Newt gave the back of his head an awkward little scratch.

"Perhaps we might learn a bit together then. I'm afraid I don't know any of those names. Any more than you might recognize 'Dumbledore' of 'Theseus.'" After a moment, shifting to stand a bit straighter, he offered a hand. "Newt Scamander."

"Ravellon." He repeated, letting the name settle on his tongue and in his mind. Luckily, it was already perfectly clear to him that she didn't like dealing with him or her job. Or, at the very least, this part of her job.

"New York is a city, actually. A-and a state. In the United States. Quite a large city, actually. One of the best known for those from other countries, I think."

His eyes flashed to the diner and then back at her, brows rising slightly in surprise. For a moment, he considered questioning that but he didn't want to start his time here by irritating anyone and everyone possibly. He'd acknowledged to Jacob that people found him annoying, best to try channeling Theseus where possible.

"I do apologize. I hadn't meant to be a bother." Just a polite smile, though it was a bit strained as he listened. And gave a nod, perhaps a little more perplexed to hear about Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower being so close than by much else at the moment. "Miss Tyler. I apologize again for disturbing you."

"No, you're right, I don't know the names Dumbledore, Theseus, Newt, or Scamander," she agreed, proving she was possibly less socially adept than he was. She looked at his hand, confused a moment before she brightened, realizing what he wanted. She shook his hand happily. People generally didn't want to shake hands with someone they saw as a silly little girl, except maybe after battle, so it had surprised her.

"I'm Najaran. What's your name?"

She... might not be the brightest flame under the cauldron.

[That's certainly generous. If his magic worked though, he wouldn't really need to learn how muggles fish. Or... orange talking cats...]

In that case, is asking for fish really a fair payment?

For a long moment Kaylin was utterly confused - and it showed - as she tried to figure out what states and countries were. Cities she understood. But then vague memories of the School Storm snuck back in, and she remembered a world where kingdoms were called countries and states were just weird. She'd failed Geometry. Or whatever the *****s the class with the maps was called.

"Well, the city I know best is Elantra and as ***** hard as that is, this place is a **** of a lot worse."

Hey, according to Me, she totally deserves it.

She didn't so much as twitch her lips, refusing to show even that much emotion. But it was nice to know this one was taking her at face value and was going to unwittingly play along. Nice change of pace, that.

"Don't appologize," she said, ice in her voice, "it delays your departure."

"Sure it is! I teach you how, and we share the first day's catch. Then you know how to fish and can eat lots of fish, and always have some on hand for me! A purrfect plan!"

Almost none of that was familiar to Newt but he nodded politely. And, if nothing else, he was finding at least one other person who used magic. As well as someone who appreciated the comfort and well-being of the local wildlife.

"I'll endeavor not to keep you too long. I understand the need or desire to train." Kind of. "I spent six years in school." And now he's getting caught up in a magical war when all he wanted to do was write a book and study magical creatures. Was that so much to ask?

"I'm not entirely sure where to start with questions, honestly."

Horses and reindeer I'm familiar with, luckily. [Not terribly unique by most standards. Or so he thinks.]

Pleased to meet you Link. I'm Newt. I'm looking forward to meeting her, and you, in person.

He gave another warm smile. "I am seven hundred and forty six, absent an emergency, I am rarely in a rush. And helping people settle in is part of what an Ascended does. Helping people learn is what a Guru does." Still, only six years of school? Not that there were schools on Ceiphro, but now that Clef understood the concept what he failed to understand was why anyone would ever stop attending.

"I can help with some general information, if you want, and see what questions arise?"

[His beloved Epona was really only unique in that she was extremely finicky about who could handle her. Ralph, the reindeer, was the product of a reality storm that stuck around afterwards, much to Link's delight.]

[Sylveon chose this moment to jump onto Link's shoulders, ribbons wrapping around the boy's eyes in a "guess who" sort of gesture.]

I admit, not very much as of yet, though the people here seem quite helpful and eager to welcome newcomers. Particularly, they've attempted to explain their own form of magic, which seems rather different from our own -- they call it 'bending', I believe.

Most do at least. I've run into one or two people who were... let's say abrasive. [One actively seemed to have been trying to get him into trouble.]

I think I prefer our own. [Partially because of familiarity.]

[It still makes very little sense to him. Nothing like that exists in his time on his world. At least not that he's encountered so far. In fairness though, he is only thirty.]

Ah, we have only humans where I'm from. [Little white lie. He isn't up to bringing up werewolves and vampires and veela and everything else the wizarding community adds.

The description though, it does bring to mind Obscurials. They aren't entirely the same, but the similarities aren't difficult to see.] And there's no way to prevent a... Spark, from dying?

Okay. Okay no, definitely not the brightest flame but he won't hold it against her. If anything, it makes him want to be even more patient. Like dealing with baby Nifflers.

"Dumbledore is my old teacher from school. Theseus, if you meet him if my brother. I'm Newt Scamander." Of course, he couldn't help but be polite. Little girl or not, manners were important. Even if he'd kind of neglected them in New York. A lot.

He really wasn't sure how to handle this situation. A large part of him wanted to get what information he could and find someone who was a little more people friendly to learn from.

"I'm quite used to traveling so really, I only need the basics. And then you won't have to worry about me troubling you any more."

Newt will disagree when he finds out he's been bamboozled

What reason would he have had to doubt her on who she was? He was new, after all. New and trying very hard not to be found half so annoying as people usually found him back home. Although, that seemed almost an impossibility with this young woman.

That though? That does get under his skin just a bit.

"Yes, well, I was taught to mind my manners. And that includes apologies for imposing on someones times unnecessarily."

By all technicalities, I do know how to. My method for doing so though is denied me here.

[Although he still doesn't know how he would explain that. Even if this cat is touched by magic in some way or another.]

Cue a brief but awkward laugh. He would never have guessed him to be so old. And he'd object on the 'only six years' part. There was only so much magical schooling one could go through before one had to step out into the world.

"That would be lovely, actually." And if he wasn't in a rush, Newt felt just a little bit less guilty about taking up his time. "I'm Newt. Newt Scamander."

[His eyes widen slightly at Sylveon's appearance, leaning back just a little in surprise. And then smiling.]
