But we work together well and we get the job done. As I'm sure your co-workers do as well.

They do. [Deep pride in his department...even if the other departments give him hell.] We don't always work well together, but we're one of the most successful departments at the MPD.

[threedoctorates]

[A nod.]

That shows you take pride in what you do.

[didntfall]

Of course, I do. Don't you?

Absolutely.

[didntfall]

[Takagi smiles.]

Then aside from the laws we uphold, I guess there's not much difference between where you work or where I do.

[threedoctorates]

No. Only the names of the agencies and the country.

[didntfall]

And the specifics of the laws. After working with a few FBI officers in the past, I have to admit that the lack of a statute of limitations on murder makes sense. We only fairly recently allowed for more investigative time for those cases.

[threedoctorates]

Cold cases you mean.

[Which was another difference. Reid knew most departments in the U.S. had entire divisions devoted to those type of cases.]

[didntfall]

[Takagi nods.] I think it's interesting how you all could solve a murder from fifty years ago and you could still hold a trial for it.

[It doesn't bring the victim back but at least it lets the families know that their loved ones weren't forgotten by the law.]

[threedoctorates]

Like you said, there isn't a statue of limitations on murder -- and the victims deserve justice, no matter when they died.

[didntfall]

We only just recently expanded the statute of limitations for murder from fifteen years to twenty-five. However, we're working towards abolishing it altogether.

[threedoctorates]

As well it should be - cold cases can still be solved, even fifty years later.

[didntfall]

...I'm not even a hundred percent why we had a statute of limitations in those cases, to be honest.

[threedoctorates]

Yes. It gives incentive for criminals to commit heinous acts and then hide out until it's safe to return, and then they can potentially 'flaunt' what they did, knowing that they cannot be arrested and tried for it.

[didntfall]

[Takagi nods his head sadly.] That almost happened in the case of Sato-san's father's murder.

[threedoctorates]

What happened?

[didntfall]

A friend of Sato-san's father killed someone during a robbery. He then killed her father when he saved him from attempting suicide. He left the country for several years to study abroad in Italy but returned in time for the anniversary when the statute of limitations was about to run out.

We managed to solve the murder and catch him in time though.

[threedoctorates]

I'm sorry for her loss.

[ He's silent for a moment. ]

I'm glad you were able to get justice for her father.

[didntfall]

To be honest, we were cutting it pretty close. That and we got lucky due to having an extra day thanks to a little legal loophole.

[threedoctorates]

Still, you managed to do it.

[didntfall]

[He nods. It'd been no thanks to him (he'd figured out how things had happened and then gotten knocked out and handcuffed inside a burning building...not fun) but at least Sato could find some peace.]

Yeah. Though my date with Sato somehow turned into an undercover operation.

[threedoctorates]

You were on a date with her when this happened?

[didntfall]

Ahaha, no that came afterward. Um, she said she'd give whoever caught her father's killer whatever they wanted, so I asked her out on a date. But she ended up using it as a cover to keep an eye on a suspect's sister.

[Worst. Luck. Ever.]

[Wow. And here he thought he had some crappy luck.]

That sounds like something that would happen to me, although I admit that I probably wouldn't have even gotten the date part, so you're already one step ahead of me.
