This dirt and gravel here is dense, and has not been recently dug, yet I find there is nothing buried beneath. It's odd. I normally have an eye for such things.

[He shakes his head.]

I must beg your pardon. I'm afraid I have lost my way. I was searching for a way back to the path to Pridemoor Castle when I became... distracted.

Hm, I'm sorry... I'm afraid you're a little more than just "lost". You are now in Nautilus, a city located in another plane of reality.

Another plane of reality? By what magic have I been brought here?

The city itself is an Aeon, a phenomenally powerful being. It reached out to you across dimensions and, consciously or not, you answered its call, and Woke to this world.

I see, but for what purpose? And how are we to return home?

That's a very good question. Unfortunately, I can't begin to understand its motivations.

[She folds her arms.]

You can return to your own world simply by going back through one of the gates, but now that you've awoken, things won't be the same. I'm told that you can only watch yourself do things while being powerless to change them. A prisoner in your own body.

This is most troubling. But perhaps good may come of our situation yet.

I beg your pardon. I have not introduced myself. I am Shovel Knight. I have taken an oath to wield my Shovel Blade in the name of justice and in aid of those in need, wherever I may find myself. Even if my arrival here was... unexpected, Nautilus should be no exception.
