Yes, it's me, though I'm starting to think there must be a rumor going around about my death. Or I have more fans than I realized.

[He's a bit in shock to see this ghost from the past reappear, and Kanan takes a second to breathe and collect himself. He nervously adjusts his shoulderplate, seemingly ill at ease]

It's just...We did think you were dead.

[Fifteen years dead, by his own approximation. And now he doesn't know whether to introduce himself as Caleb Dume, or...]

My name's Kanan Jarrus. I...grew up during the Clone Wars. You were a legend to us all.

[All this is true - he doesn't outright lie to Anakin. But he doesn't quite share the whole truth, either. He's still getting used to past and future being linked, here]

You make it sound as though I've been gone a long time. I was just on Coruscant before I ended up here.

[But this is slightly troubling. Did something happen?]

Am I missing something? How did this rumor of my death get started?

[Never in a million years did he think he'd end up in this position. Still reeling, he takes a few long seconds to sort his mind from all the chaos bundling up inside it. Past wanting to mix with present and future - some things should stay dead. ]

Fifteen years, more or less. At least, by my count.

I mean, we assumed - everyone did - that you'd been lost in battle when the Clone Wars ended. You never resurfaced.

[This is his sly way of getting out of talking about Order 66. No sense freaking out Anakin the way he did the clone bros. At least, not in their very first conversation]

[Anakin is probably going to freak out either way, but this will probably be less of one.]

[He gives an apologetic wince, bringing his hand up to the back of his neck]

I am being serious. This is Nautilus. It..does things to space and time. Bends it, manipulates it. It brings in people from all over the timestream. That's how come I'm fifteen years into your future. Or you're...fifteen years into my past. Your choice.

[Oh boy. This is a lot to take him. Though it does dawn on him ... If this person is from the future, he might be able to tell him what happens. And then Anakin could prevent it from happening.]

Then you must tell me, why does everyone think I'm dead? What happened?

[Conversations He Doesn't Want to Have: 101. Kanan grimaces, but it feels wrong to lie to another Jedi. Not to mention the other can probably sense that he won't be telling the entire truth]

There's...something happens at the end of the Clone Wars, Master. We're betrayed. Most of the Jedi are killed. We'd just assumed you were one of them when no one was able to find where you'd gone.

I'm sorry.

[No, no, no! There's no way that could happen. There's no way he could simply fail and allow everyone to die. He tries to calm down the rush of emotions overflowing him. He knows what happens now. He can stop it. He can save everyone.]

Who betrayed us? I have to know.

[Kanan is going to study his feet very carefully in this. Bringing up these memories after all these years is more painful than he expected, and he'd never dream he'd have to actually explain it to those who were caught up in the middle of it all]

The Emperor, and the clone army.

I...spoke, briefly, to a couple of clones here and I'm not so sure how voluntary their betrayal was, but it was a plot from the beginning by the Sith to rid the galaxy of Jedi.

Were we infiltrated? How did this get past the order?

Dissolved, later on. But it isn't as if they held any significant power before that. Nothing that could rival the Empire.

A lot of things got past the order, Master. If you're asking for specifics, I don't have them. I wasn't very old when it happened.
