Just no.

Which is a lie. But he's afraid to tell her who he is beyond this.

He offers a small shrug. A gesture that might actually seem familiar to Donna.
"Maybe we could discover it together."

Doesn't matter who he is, that's simple truth.

"That is pretty much always what it is to me. Why do you think it's more?"
Obviously, he's not saying she's wrong.
no subject
And, oh, forget it! "Come on, if you're coming. Let's go see what's about. There has to be something."
no subject
"I have missed you, Donna Noble."
And there might be a tone of familiarity there that Caecilius never had with Donna (and never would, no offense). But more than that it would sound rightly proper if it came out of a mouth with an Estuary accent rather than a Scottish one.
"Pick a direction, any direction."
And yes, the hand clapping is still happening.
no subject
She ends up picking the route that takes them a bit further in to a populate area. Her brain is turning, thinking, although in the end she ends up just blurting it out. "You're not Caecilius, are you? So the question is, who are you, and why are you wearing his face? If you want something, I don't have anything. My mum will tell you to keep me if you're looking for a ransom."
no subject
"I'll answer your questions, if you answer mine first. How's your head? Any piercing pain? Does it feel like exploding? Better yet, what was the last adventure you had with the Doctor?"
Because he had to be sure first. Her safety - her life was worth more than all the pain he would endure of being someone else around her.

He chuckles softly and holds his arms up to ward her off from hitting him.
"I... Had to be sure. Please. Answer the last question: where was the last place you travelled with the Doctor?"
no subject
That should cover it.
no subject
"Oh, Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna! I'd never explode this beautiful, intelligent mind of yours."
Wipe her memories to stop it exploding, yes, but not make it explode. He looks like he might hug her and then stops. He's not a hugger now.
"So, remember how Jack said I was going to change and I didn't? I did later. It's me! I'm the Doctor. And I have this face because of you!"
And he sounds entirely too pleased with himself for that whole explanation.

Yet when he starts to speak again, it takes a moment to register the I part. Her brow furrows and her mouth opens, although it closes again, perplexed and confused, and had she heard that right? But... But...
And oh. Oh, he sounds far too happy. And her eyes narrow. "You- You- what? You just decided hey, let's steal this guy's look and his body, and then prance around pretending to be him?"
no subject
He takes a breath, has to calm himself down and explain it properly.
"Time Lords, we change when we're about to die. Every cell in our body renews itself. But it means we come out looking... different. New body, new-ish personality. I'm from hundreds of years in your future, so I had to make sure I wasn't going to hurt you with knowing it was me. So, I pretended to be him until I knew you'd be safe knowing it was me."
Spoilers, all of it. Sort of.
"Anyway. I have this face to remind me what you said: 'I don't have to save the whole town, just save someone.'"
See Donna, you're important to the Doctor hundreds of years after he leaves you. You're that important.
And now he's grinning like a loon.
no subject
She remembers Jack holding her back, and how the Doctor had said he didn't need to change, how he has siphoned off the energy in to his hand (which will never stop being strange). "You're a Time Lord."
He travels through time. He can be a million years ahead of her, and he could still pop in for a cup of tea and gossip if he wants. Although, wait- wait. Back it up. "My head is going to explode one day from knowing you?!"
Maybe later, once she gets over all of it, the last part will sink in. But for now, the whole head exploding part is what Donna is stuck on.
no subject
"Don't mind that. I stop it from happening. We've always said we were best friends and I protect my friends. You'll be safe and fine and happy."
He makes sure of it.
no subject
And, yes, his words do mean something. In fact her shoulders drop and that uppity expression shifts. "Good, or I'd be making your head explode right now."
no subject
He offers a small smirk.
"That's more like it. So... How did you end up here?"
Because clearly it's now sorted who they are, time to move on to bigger and more important questions.
no subject
Donna shook her head though. "If I knew that, I'd have left the same way I came."
no subject
Though, these days, he doesn't use it often. Killing himself over 230 billion times tends to have that effect.
He nods once. "We will figure it out and get everyone home...."
Because isn't that what the Doctor does? 'We'... he hopes Donna will join him. He's missed her more than he could ever admit.
no subject
Which, this is strange. He hadn't changed before, and somewhere along the line, he has. Had she been there for it? She doesn't ask, but she does look to him. "If anyone can, you can."
