"How you felt? Thinking he was some long lost father to you?" That much he'd picked up on their other, earlier encounter. He didn't need to read her thoughts now. "He was my father and believe me I many times wished that he wasn't. It's easy to pretend he was wonderful when you knew him for mere, what? Days? Maybe he even corrected parental mistakes in that brief time with you. Maybe he was there for you. He hadn't been there for me."
His brief tirade out, he again looked away, frowning.
"General Hux is here. But others are here too.... Others from the past."
no subject
"Why did you wish that?" she whispered, "You have...had...parents. You knew them. You could speak to them all you wished. I didn't."
In frustration, she wiped a tear from her cheek, gritting her teeth.
"Others...from the past? Are they...well-known?" she lowered the lightsaber slowly before stowing it in her bag.

Again he ignored that first question in favour of the latter.
He thought of Luke, but should he mention him to Rey? Maybe not for now. Luke was a complicated matter, even if he'd been the same one they knew. This one was proof of other alternate timelines, which was even more complicated that just people from the past.
But there was one other name that sprung to mind.
"You could say that," he answered to her question of if they were well known. "Darth Vader is here."
And he waited for her reaction. She must have heard of him. Everyone had at least heard about Vader's exploits, he thought.

Her thoughts were shattered in an instant when she heard that name. She felt her body turn cold and the world was spinning, making her feel sick. Shakily, she knelt down, trying to center herself.
Darth Vader? Here?
"...have you met him?" her mind screamed that such a meeting was not good and her expression made her position on the matter very clear.
no subject
"Yes, of course. Many times," he replied.
He kept his own expression neutral. She didn't need to know that Vader had called him weak and all but dismissed him as useless.
no subject
He's worse off than you.
Slowly, she rose back to a standing position, taking a step towards him.
"How can you see your way in the dark? How can he?"
no subject
Somehow he appeared to be leaning back away from her as she stepped forward. He wasn't afraid of her but in some way she was intimidating. There was an untapped power he knew was within her.
no subject
Han wouldn't want that. Leia wouldn't either.
no subject
Abruptly, he was concerned it was a ruse; a trick to have him let his guard down and he quickly backed away from her.
He tried to change the subject, away from himself.
"You... you need to be told what this place is. You cannot easily leave although it is possible. You have to adjust. You have to change."
He appeared bothered now; unsettled. Even as he covered it up with words.
no subject
"Do you always avoid topics you don't like?" she retorted, sounding more petulant than she had intended, "Breathe..."
The last word might have been for him or herself. Breathing had been helpful for her in calming her body and her mind. Kylo Ren seemed like he needed such a technique.
"Your powers react to your emotions. If you can calm your body, you can calm your mind."
Who was the teacher?
no subject
"Are you trying to instruct me now? As if there are not enough Jedi around here already, offering their expertise," he hadn't thought about it before he mentioned Jedi to her... but he was rattled.
And he was still avoiding the other topics.
no subject
Luke? Oh please say Luke. She touched her bag, drawing confidence from the lightsaber within.

"Probably names you do not know so what would be the point to list them? As for listening to them, you will find that many things are different here. I have trained with some of them. I live among them, at the Temple."
Well, some of them. Not all of the Jedi live at the Air Temple or in the East.
But he thought his words may again be distracting enough to steer the conversation away from him personally.

There seemed to be a conflict of interests there - unless, of course, he wasn't telling them the truth. Rey knew it was silly to be disappointed, but she knew she would be if that was the case.
"Tell me their names. I'm happy to meet any Jedi." she had a slight hero complex when it came to them - yet it was nothing to how he felt about his grandfather.
no subject
"I told you. Things are different here. The Jedi protect Darth Vader." Well, one Jedi in particular. He still was uncertain about how close Obi-Wan and his grandfather were. It seemed to be very complicated. "I rarely see him myself."
Plus he currently looked like Anakin Skywalker, but he didn't add that for the moment.
no subject
"They wouldn't!" that went against all she knew about the Jedi; in fact, it was downright offensive, "He's a Sith. They wouldn't protect a Sith."
With her hands balled into fists, Rey seemed to consider giving him a good punch. While that might feel good in the moment, it wouldn't be worth it once he lashed out.
no subject
"You have a lot to learn. Follow me," and he turned as if expecting her to simply obey and do as he said.
no subject
"Do you even know my name?" because she had one. She wasn't just Scavenger.
no subject
Straightening up as he turned to face her again, he looked a little annoyed.
"Does that matter?"
It wasn't really a yes or a no.
no subject
On Jakku, you either Scavenged or starved. The options were few unless you wanted to turn into a thief.
"I'm also a talented pilot and I know a lot about ships. That's why your father, more or less, left me his ship and Chewbacca with it."
no subject
He didn't like that she seemed to be getting everything that he thought should be his by family rights - the ship, such as it was; that lightsaber she had stashed away; maybe even his father and Chewbacca's respect. Everything felt backwards as if he should be in her place.
no subject
"I was only telling you the truth."
For what it was worth, she moved to follow him. She liked him better when he showed some humanity.
"The important part was my name anyway." though she hoped he didn't ask for a surname. She didn't know it.
no subject
"Congratulations," he said wryly. "You have a name. Can we move on now?"
no subject
no subject
"What are you trying to do? Make friends?"
Why did it seem everyone who didn't mock him wanted to try to befriend him? This confused him and it was even more bewildering coming from Rey. He wasn't sure what aim she had in getting him to call her by name. He was suspicious of her motives.
