But, well, it really can't hurt to ask. Surely someone here knows the place better than he does. So he shifts his shamisen onto his back as he stands up to better properly talk to the other kid. He gets straight to the point, even though his tone is just a little hesitant still. ]
How much do you know about magic?
no subject
[Link rubbed his arms.]
But, magic here works differently. I had to--everyone has to--relearn everything.
no subject
Not like that matters. His attention is instead caught by the latter part of the explanation, and he blinks in confusion before furrowing his brows. ]
What? But I've been playing for years. It's not like I forgot how.
[ He pauses for a bit. Wait, he said the magic, not the instrument. But that was a whole different situation. ]
And I don't even know how to control the magic in the first place. It just happens. How am I supposed to relearn it if I don't even know how it works to begin with?
no subject
I mean...I had to start small, and just made bottles of milk at first. But, I've gotten better!
Oh! Right. I'm Link!
[Other kids were great! He kicked himself for not being a little better socially.]
no subject
[ ...Hm. Come to think of it, that was kind of how it worked before, too. He thought of something hard enough and the paper listened. In that case, what's the point of having to start over? ]
My name's Kubo. Have you been here for very long?
no subject
[Link was about to say 'no' when he realized that he'd been in Nautilus for over a year. Seven years was still his standard for a long time, but, he figured other people might not agree.]
Uh, I guess it depends on your point of view...I've been here a little over a year.
no subject
A year? I can't be here for a year!
[ Not when he was in the middle of something so important. He momentarily flounders for the words to convey the urgency of the situation. ]
I- I'm a hero! I was on a quest!
no subject
Uh, you're not stuck here. You could probably go home in a few days, but, it's a little weird feeling.
....time is stopped back home, so you don't have to worry about bad things happening while you're not there. Trust me, I get it. I'm just lucky my quest was over when I got here---and my Princess is here too, which is great!

[ A 'weird feeling' could be a lot of things. He isn't sure how his situation back home could get any stranger, but better to find out now than find out whenever he returns.
But if he truly doesn't have to worry (for now) about whatever's going to happen to him- to all of them, back home- then the more important part is finding out what exactly this place is. How he got here-- who had called to him? It couldn't have been the eyes, not if he truly wasn't where he came from (and things truly weren't moving forward there).
Unless he failed. Unless this was a trap. But he pushes aside those thoughts for now, instead turning and looking with interest at Link. ]
You were on a quest, too? With a Princess? [ He smiles slightly at that. A hero like from one of his stories-- and one who'd succeeded. He kind of admires him already. ] You should tell me your story one day. And then I could tell it, too, once I learn to control my magic again. [ It might be good to branch out. To perform new material. ]

[He nodded.]
Ah, yep! We stopped an evil king and fixed all the bad stuff he'd done. [Link's smile faltered just a little.] Some stuff was pretty hard, and sometimes things seemed really, really, hopeless.
Everything worked out in the end, though!
[His smile returned with a sheepish note.]
I dunno if anyone would ever be interested in hearing about me. Zelda, maybe, but, I'm not that interesting.

[He shakes his head, pushing the thought aside. It complicated things-- of course it did, but there wasn't anything he could do about it, not yet. It was much easier to focus on Link's tale than worry about his own.
He moves back a couple feet, bending back down to the ground and kneeling, spreading out a few sheets of paper in front of him.]
An evil king. [He quirks a slight smile at that, even though it's hard to make it reach his eyes at the moment.] That sounds a lot like a story I know.
[Carefully, he starts folding the paper until another origami figure starts to emerge. It's humanoid, much like the miniature samurai, but this shorter in stature and sporting a green cap and distinctive spikes of 'hair'. He looks it over, and then hands it to Link once it's finished.]
But everyone likes to hear about the hero of the story.
