Nah. Technically you just stopped dreaming, if you really want to get into bullshit terminology right this very second. I'd rather we didn't.

[ethereal plane. god, she knows people just like this. doesn't particularly like them, but knows them. just the thought makes her roll her eyes.]

I guess this would qualify as somewhere in-between. Physical as in 'hey, cool, I'm not sinking straight through the fucking ground', ethereal as in 'but the ground is fake, actually'.

[He frowns, ruffling his hair. The last thing he remembered was sitting in his car, outside a client's house. Cranky demon that wouldn't leave someone's attic. He figured he had just maybe fallen asleep by accident, but....

Oh, Christ. Okay. Great. That's fine. Do you know how to get out of here? 'Cus, like, I got a job to do and stuff. Don't exactly have time to hang around.

It's kind of super not fine, but I'm glad you're handling the situation well. That's good for you.

[at the question, she makes a kind of 'ehh' noise accompanied by an indecisive tilting of her hand.]

Physically? You can walk right back through the gate you came from this very second, if you want. But you chose to be here, buddy, so even if you do go back you're trapped. It's like being in a cage once you've answered the call. Leaving just doesn't feel right.

And I mean that literally, not in some 'oohhh but if I run home I'm not fulfilling my special purpose that I must possess because a god-city told me so' moral high ground sort of way.

[He lets out a short, dry laugh.]

You have no idea. Like, a few months ago I would've been losing my mind over this. [Now he just sort of...deals with things as they come.]

Excuse me? Trapped? A city-god?! [Of COURSE he gets stuck in some stupid dimension with a stupid almighty being pushing its stupid agenda. Not that he's met any sort of god, personally, but if it was anything like the spirits he's dealt with....

He studies the stranger's expression for a few moments.]

Is it benevolent or malevolent?

I'm with you on that one. [it's still a fair bit weirder than the shit she's seen before but. not, like, entirely out of the realm of possibility, she guesses. not anymore.

she holds up her hands at his outburst, though she lowers them after briefly reflecting that it might be seen as condescending. she'd met more than enough people like that when she'd entered the city, no need to pass that bullshit along.] Okay, it's not, like, a literal god. Not in the religious sense, it's just powerful and on a whole other plane of existence. You know how it is. But yeah, it's...

[she trails off, and it honestly takes her way too long to think over the question. when she does answer, it's very slowly and kind of indecisively.]

...Benevolent. I mean, it's the city of change, so go ahead and interpret that however you want, but it doesn't actively try to hurt us. [the chaos seems like it does at times but that's a whole other mess she doesn't want to get into straightaway.] Thinks it's got a sense of humor, though. It's kind of just a lot to deal with all around.

[He taps his finger against his chin as he frowns. He opens his mouth, as if to say something, but then decides against it and begins to pace in a small circle. This was just...a lot to take in at once.]

Right. Okay. So, let me see if I have this right: this...god, spirit, whatever, calls people to this plane of existence. I assume they're not all from the same place--or, maybe they are, I don't know. [He clasps his hands together and turns to face her.] Why? What's stopping it from calling everyone here? What's the point of messing with everyone's existence?

Actually, where are you from? Are you human, or some other entity?

[yes he likes asking questions. no he won't shut up until he understands everything]

Different places. Different universes, specifically, but yeah, that all sounds about right.

[she shifts her weight a bit at the question, crossing her arms. on one hand she can appreciate that this guy is going straight for the most important questions, but on the other hand it's kind of a pain in the ass to explain.]

Look, I don't really know who it chooses or why. I don't even know if we're really chosen or if we're just the only ones who actually bothered to show up. But... we do have some kind of purpose here, allegedly. I'll let you choose if you actually buy into that, I guess.

[she snorts at that. another good question to ask, around here.]

Human, last I checked. From... Earth? Or some version of it. There's kind of a lot of Earths, as it turns out. What about you?

[He shakes his head in disbelief--the more he heard about this city, the more concerned he became. At least someone here was helpful enough to tell him about it. Most of the time, people just ignored him.

Then again, it'd be difficult to take someone seriously if they just walked up to you and asked, 'Excuse me, what plane of existence is this?']

Not really, but...y'know, who am I to question an all-powerful entity? [Because it also helps ignore the implications of everything.]

Human, Earth. Or, some Earth, as you just said. Just checking, 'cus, like, I work with a lotta supernatural entities. [Lets out a short laugh.] If you couldn't tell already.

Not completely all-powerful, but... significantly powerful. And unpredictable. Not the best combo, I'll admit, but you kind of get used to the bullshit after a while. [she shrugs.] It's really just annoying most of the time.

[but that gets some raised eyebrows.] Supernatural entities, huh? I wouldn't say I work with any, but they, uh... they sure do exist back where I come from. [she wonders how many other earths are like that-- if it's common or if they're from some wildly similar parallel dimensions or some nonsense like that. she never claimed to understand how any of that space shit works.] Real pain in the ass, too, not sure how you can manage a job like that. There's a lot of it here, too.
