"It's quite an inspiration, really. You're someone to aspire to be," Victoria returned the hug with a smile. "What is it like inside?"

"Come on in and see." She let her in, with a warm smile. Kitchy. What was Retro to most here wouldn't seem so to Victoria, but still interesting to be sure. She pointed to the door with Elvis on it. "The restrooms and large kitchen are through there. I've found myself quite territorial over the kitchen these days, so I'd appreciate not having anyone in there, it's the door that is locked, which should make it obvious enough. Smaller kitchen is here, in front, and you're welcome in this one so long as you are careful of the knives and flat top. I'll not be explaining to your mother why you got hurt, alright?"

She raised her brows as she looked around. The inside was really nice, it reminded her of the diners back in the Harris' time. Elvis was still popular in 1963 — even Victoria listened to some of this records. She smiled to the decorations and explored a little, though was careful to listen to what her aunt was saying. The kitchen was locked? Victoria nodded.

"I won't go in there, I promise." Especially since she had been asked not to go in there. She wasn't very good at cooking anyway so practicing cooking in the smaller kitchen might be easier for her. She swallowed as she was given a warning about the knives and the heat of the machines. "I- I won't touch them without express permission, Auntie."

"Good, you're a good girl, so I know that I can trust you." She kissed her temple, then put on the hot water kettle. "How about I make us some tea and we can start in on Bending?"

Victoria felt heat rise to her cheeks at the compliment but accepted it with silent embarrassment. Looking around, she lowered herself into one of the booths and nodded to her aunt. Tea would be lovely, she absolutely adored it. The warmth of it was always so inviting.

"I think that to be a rather reasonable plan, Aunt Maddie." She was pretty giddy to see the Bending thing in action!
memories_of_me: (Alright I'll give you that one)

[personal profile] memories_of_me 2018-02-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"What sort of tea are you in the mood for today? This place has provided me quite the selection," she lied easily. Whatever kind Victoria wanted, she would Bend up, but it wasn't something she'd found in her notes, the kind of tea preferred.

Any sort of tea would do her just fine, really, but given the choice she had to go with a nice, sweet peach variation. She set her palms to the table in front of herself to pat it gently and smiled to her aunt.

"I think a nice peach tea would be delicious, do you have any?" Little did she know that bending would occur to get it though, honestly, she should have thought about that since Maddie had made it clear that things could be acquired by that means. Still, it wasn't something on her mind. She was still busy taking in everything in the diner and enjoying being somewhere safe for a spell.
memories_of_me: (Talking at the end of the universe)

Never a worry!

[personal profile] memories_of_me 2018-02-17 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
She set up a sweet peach herbal tea to steep. "Of course, dear one. Something to eat as well?"

"Oh, ah, maybe. What sort of things do you sell here to eat, usually? Is there a menu?" She could have probably thought up anything at all and her aunt could have used bending to make it a reality. But! If she was going to be in the diner, she might as well look into what was properly sold, right?

Me chuckled lightly. "Generally whatever I feel like making, and if they don't want it, they are welcome to eat elsewhere. You, however, are allowed to choose."

Ah, so it was mostly bending. That got a laugh out of her, though. She shifted in her seat and nodded to her aunt. "I think perhaps just some eggs, bacon and toast perhaps?" At least she hadn't asked for a full English breakfast.

She nodded and got to work on the cooking on the small flat top stove. "I know from your point of veiw, I haven't been gone at all, but I swear it feels like whole life times have passed since I've seen you last, catch me up while I cook?"

She wasn't wrong, it hadn't felt like any time at all had passed since she was last listening in on to Maggie and Maddie talking about recipes, men, life and everything in between. She dropped her gaze to the table to think about it. It might help to know what things were like on her end before she had arrived here but it was just as easy to try and relay to her what the latest news in the family was.

What was the latest news? Frank had been back to work for some few months now, after the incident that led her to leaving the Doctor, things had finally managed to go back to normal. Maggie was mostly trying to get used to her new role as a parent and Victoria had been trying to sort out public schools in the 1960s — a large change from the 1860s. Victoria relayed to her aunt that Frank was doing well at work once more and that, in her opinion, Maggie was being something of a nuisance when it came to herself making friends and yet, she appreciated it. Not having had a mother figure in years, Victoria did like that Maggie was trying. It was just a little bristling to be told "no" among other things.

"School has been interesting though," she tried to choose her words carefully though as she wasn't meant to let people know she had been hauled through time. Glancing out the window, she patted her palms to the table once more. "I was home schooled before I moved in with the Harrises, you see." Well, it wasn't a lie, not really. "Public school is much more opened," after all there are even boys there! "but of course you knew that." She waved her hand to dismiss herself. "I'm not certain that I like the mathematics quite as much as Daddy did, numbers a quite difficult to sort out and the equations just get more and more confusing the more we progress our classes."

Such was the hard life of a young school girl.
memories_of_me: (Oh do continue)

"Well, I think you will find school here something between homeschooling and public school. Not too many kids here your age, and everyone is on their own level besides, coming from so many different places. There are a number of kids just a little older than you from Paris, a boy a little younger than you with ears like an elf in a fantasy painting, a few others perhaps. But not many. So you will probably only have one or two students in your class with you."

[personal profile] waterfield 2018-02-20 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
A boy from Paris, that sounded interesting albeit not quite as much as the younger bloke with elven features. Both were likely very interesting people. She would have to talk to them to try and fit in.

"Certainly a rather small classroom, that." Which would definitely be a reminder to her home schooling as she had been the only student at that time. "I suppose, though, that it means individual aid is likely to be rather easy in a classroom that little."

After a beat, she added: "Are there many persons here whom are very different? Like, with the elven sort of features and such?"
memories_of_me: (Shadow of a doubt)

[personal profile] memories_of_me 2018-02-20 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"While the majority here seem to be more or less human, there are a number of people who are not. And even among the humans it seems as though there are many variations on earth itself. It is a rather odd place," she said with a small thoughtful frown. "But then there are reasons I generally choose to have my diner here at the fringe of the city rather than opening one in the heart of it."

Aliens, then. At least alien or foreign to herself. She shifted and nodded. She could get used to it, slowly, supposing they weren't trying to kill her or assimilate her in some manner or another. Victoria raised her brows at the last sentence though.

"What reasons might those be..."
memories_of_me: (Please be less stupid)

[personal profile] memories_of_me 2018-02-20 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
She had been hoping Victoria would leave it at the implication.

"Among other reasons, to deal with new or odd people in small doses." Thatw as dancing all over between the border of truth and lie without quite being either.

[personal profile] waterfield 2018-02-20 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Curiosity killed the cat and in this case, it was setting its sights on Victoria, it seemed. Her curiosity got her in trouble often.

"Oh," so she didn't really want to deal with ... people. Placing a diner at the edge of the city would make sense in that case. But Maddie had always seemed so friendly, why didn't she want to be among the people? Perhaps she was just more solitary than Victoria thought. After all, she liked her privacy, too. "I suppose that makes sense then, yes. Do you get many people here at all being so far from the city's heart?"
memories_of_me: (I've been waiting)

[personal profile] memories_of_me 2018-02-21 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not too many," she said with a small chuckle. "Enough to be as social as I care to be without having too many things to absorb at once. As I said previously, not all people here are what you might expect. Time to myself between is restful." As she almost never had anyone in, she was as or more social than she cared to be. The you there meant Victoria, not a general you including herself, she was long past being overly surprised. Rusty was the last cargo on that boat, she suspected. And time to herself was often restful indeed.

Taken separately, not a lie in that whole batch.

"I suppose that makes this place rather quiet, then. Which is unlike the diners that I recall but also quite nice if one thinks about it, honestly. After all, one could get a lot of reading done if one sat in a quiet, cozy diner such as this." Away from the demands of home and the like, sitting alone in a booth with a nice milkshake, or tea, and a good book. Yes! It sounded rather perfect to her.

"Some people are more difficult to deal with than others, yes, quite right. I imagine that I'll sort that out for myself sooner or later."
memories_of_me: (Alright I'll give you that one)
