It's All About Big Brother!

(Inspired by recent events in Nautilus and Alba's Dark Future memes.)

Dystopian Future
Change is a thing of the past

What is this?

Those shouting "Conspiracy!" were actually right in the end. Unopposed but by a few, the government continued to grow. In the end, they won.

How did that happen?

Despite the best efforts of Crawford, Leslie, V and anyone else who disagreed with the government, they were swiped aside as more and more laws were enacted. Soon, there were restrictions and regulations placed on Bending. But laws are difficult to enforce when everyone can shape reality. With time, they were able to regulate it. How they managed to lock down the Heart, no one could say. It took time. At first, Bending just took more effort. But over the course of a year, it grew harder and harder. New regulations came out. With special permissions, Bending was possible, but getting the permissions proved difficult. Because of this, a proper economy began to blossom. But stricter and stricter regulations were enacted, making it more difficult for people to live the way they'd grown accustomed to in Nautilus.

Where do we stand, now?

Fifteen years have passed since the government was first set up. Corruption and a thirst for power led to Bending being completely abolished, save for those in the highest levels of government and those of the special enforcement teams. And even then, it is limited. They were able to lock it down even to the point of preventing those deceased from returning. The only thing they could not prevent is people from other worlds answering the call sent out so long ago. Propaganda began to spread, using the name of Nautilus as some sort of great leader, reminding everyone that the city was watching them. Anyone found trying to Bend or using canon powers would be captured and re-educated. There were rumors that even a mere thought against the government could earn someone a stay in the facility at the center of the city. Kalliste is a wasteland, housing a handful of refugees. Helix remains the only last strong-hold against Nautilus. But the gate between the two cities has been sealed for years. Propaganda suggests that those left in Helix are nothing but brutal savages and should be avoided at all costs and that Kalliste is an uninhabitable wasteland.

Where does this leave us?

The forces in Helix have been decimated. Whether captured and re-educated, executed or killed in battle. Resources are scarce. In the city, resources have always been scarce. People are allowed the bare minimum, the entire city reduced to little better than poverty. There are jobs now. Most jobs are at the Ministry, but some are in shops, providing people their meager needs in exchange for their meager income.

What can we do?

That is entirely up to you, Wakened! Where do you stand?

1. Tag with your character explaining their current status. Note in the subject what city they are in.
2. People tag you and you start to threading either action posts or network posts.
3. The Government is watching. Especially the network.
4. Bending is unavailable to everyone except those on the special task force or high up in the government.
5. Canon powers are on, unless you're caught using them.

Note: This is styled after the book 1984, so drawn any inspiration you would like from that. The "Thought Police" for this really can read thoughts. So anyone on the task force have gained that ability.

What happened to him: It was only logical to find himself a comfortable place within the government as it rose. After proving himself a worth ally, he offered his skills to assist the city in gaining it's mental hold on it's citizens. It also gave him a prime hiding place. Not that he wanted any direct involvement, but rather a position where he could provide a great deal of influence. That isn't to say he doesn't stir things up here and there. He is suspect of many crimes, but any time he is scanned or checked out, he's clean. Not a mutinous thought in his head. At least none that can be found.

What happened to him: Kick-Ass didn't go down easy. He fought as hard as he could, but he never broke any laws. But a vigilante was never good for the business of government. As soon as laws governing thought were put into place, they had him. He was one of the first executed for thought crime, used as an example for the rest of the city.

What happened to him: He is a model citizen. Or so everyone seems to think. He plays his part, does his job. He causes no trouble. But he is doing all he can against the government without drawing attention to himself. Coping with hallucinations from the Animus has taught him to school his mind, storing away that which he doesn't want to be seen. In secret, he's been trying to get the assassins going again, recruiting who he can. He's been using the tunnels under the city to hide his activities. To hide himself from the thought police, he changes his clothes when not being a model citizen--a black hoodie and a handkerchief over his face. He goes by just D, as well. Not that he doesn't trust anyone, but if anyone knew who he really was, they'd be at risk of exposing him if they were caught.

What happened to him: Once the government started to take hold and put restrictions on bending, Russia joined it. In his mind, this was a chance to help rebuild what he'd lost. So he quickly weaseled his way into the system, helping the government with whatever he could. Russia became one of their top lackeys, though he never really seemed to do one thing for long. While the behavior was frowned upon, no one really cared, because whatever it was he helped with, he was damn good at--Be it spewing propaganda, helping with the re-education system or otherwise. (It helped that the Cold War was still fresh in his mind, of course. He remembered all the tricks, the way things had been done.) Currently, he's working with task force, trying to hunt down anyone suspect.

- Russia has a blind faith in the government, and truly believes it's the way life should be.

What happened to him: As corruption spread in the government, Edgeworth began to have serious problems with it. Whether he was killed by a part of the rebellion, as the government has long claimed, or whether he was killed by someone on the inside who found his ethics problematic, remains unclear to the majority of the population.

What happened to him: This government is not unlike what Lelouch opposed as Zero, the government oppressing large numbers of people. Lelouch is working within the goverment to position himself to manipulate others with his Geass with the ultimate goal of turning Bending back on full force or destabilize the government at a minimum. He has made it up high enough to have access to Bending. He is back to being ruthless, killing wherever he finds it advantageous. At times, he assists the rebellion as a masked figure, but only when he is confident of evading capture. Very few people know his true identity behind the mask.

[At some point, perhaps late one night, you might run into someone on the street as he comes out of an alleyway, Damon. His face is hidden by a dark gray cloak, but even the shadows aren't enough to cover the glint of glowing blue on one side underneath. He's pretty rag tag, wearing mostly dark clothing that's seen better days. In fact, he looks like nothing more than a vagabond. Under the cloak, a belt of tools clink back and forth, and that left arm...something wrong with it. Mostly because it's not human. It's all machine, the hand with three "fingers" and about twice the size of the more normal looking extremity on the right.]

[He steps back as he runs into Damon, bowing his head, right hand reaching to pull the cloak hood further down to hide his face.]

S...Sorry. Sorry about that. Didn't see you...

Of course! <3

What happened to her: Too many years under Malcolm Reynolds' leadership taught Kaylee several things about life and government. She was one of the first to run for Helix, River and Serenity in-tow. She does her best to maintain everything she can in the city. It's difficult, without the resources they really need, but she still tries to keep the positive and cheerful nature going, because that's all that keeps her going.

The city needed a solid system to prosper and it did. Edgeworth saw it coming first and so Phoenix laid low as the two waited for their chance to expose the corruption and turn things around. But then Edgeworth was killed and so Phoenix disappeared with key pieces of evidence though his files are not by any means complete. Whether he's died or is able to block the Thought Police from his true thoughts is currently unknown. But that newcomer over there certainly looks like him. She's good at hiding, too--being able to hide deep within the Earth, where no one could find her. She frequently makes trips into Nautilus, of course, to scavenge for food and listen for any news.

Years of seeing Nautilus slowly spiral downwards has toughened Toph. She doesn't trust anyone anymore, and when on the surface she tries to keep to herself.

What happened to her: New people were still being pulled into Nautilus, and Wendy quickly took it upon herself to take care of any children who came through. After several months of conflict, she was finally able to convince the government to allow her to set up a home at Budehuc. The home remains closely monitored, but...

Old castles like Budehuc still have their hidden nooks and crannies, and the hidden basements of Budehuc were quickly remodeled to suit any refugees. An extended tunnel system helps keep the facilities secret and hidden.

What happened to him: Ratchet had always been one for a degree of Order, but what the new government offered was far too much for his liking. He washed his hands of any active part of it early on, even before the restrictions began. At first, he managed to grudgingly gain permission to continue using Bending and his powers for the purposes of running a clinic, for the good and health of the citizenry of Nautilus. However, over time, Ratchet could not keep his vocalizer muted and realized he either needed to vacate or be destroyed for speaking out against what he did not condone.

Hence, he ended up in Helix. It was a hard life, yet one he knew he would have to deal with and in a way, it was the Great War all over again. Terrible conditions in many areas where people were sick and in need of help. Ratchet set up his own clinic in Helix as one of the leading physicians there, lending his good old fashioned know-how to keeping alive those who remained against the tyranny of Nautilus. Times are tough and he rarely has all he needs to do his job, yet he soldiers on, regardless.

What Happened to Him: If there was one thing anyone could say about Rex, it was that he was destined to burn brightly before going out in a display of defiance and violence. Never all that appreciative of authority figures, Rex presented an immediate problem for the task force as soon as the restrictions began to fall into place. For while, he fought them tooth and nail where he could, using everything Six, Kairava and Starscream ever taught him, breaking laws and struggling to use Bending until it was completely taken away. He then used his own powers to fight back, taking on severe injuries to the point where his nanites began to have difficulty healing his wounds completely. Where flesh failed to regrow, machine took over.

The final straw came when his body was damaged in a fight so badly, it traumatized him...and activated his nanite automatic defense protocol. Rex then became everything he'd learned to combat in his home world - a rampaging biomechanical EVO several stories tall, fueled by cold logic and bent on unleashing chaos. The task force rallied and took him down, though not before an eject sequence got Rex's real body away from the fight. The explosion from his machine form sent out an EMP blast that temporarily crippled all active electronics in the area. In the confusion, Rex escaped to Helix...battered, beaten and having paid the ultimate price for his defiance - his memories. Now he's just another lost soul in Helix. He can read and write. Speak English and Spanish. But all the names and faces of his past, and so many of the memories associated with them have been wiped clean. He blanks out all too frequently these days, even without his nanites being involved. Think you know him? He probably doesn't know you.

What happened to her? There were secrets in her past that she was determined to uncover; secrets about who another her had become. She did, at no small cost to herself, but things were known to her now. She was no Deva and no Ashura...
But some things never change. Just as another her found a third option and left when a government became too opressive so, too, did she.
She walked into Chaos and wandered, not even in the Labyrinth but somewhere outside it, in a land of thought and flow, and eventually found that there were other worlds than these.
So she wanders. She knows that the others are powerful, but she jumps from world to world now, running faster than they can catch her, and with each jump she finds power. Learns a lesson. she's found the Domiciles of ancient and dead Deva and she's searched for the other mirrors - for other versions of individuals, for an Aaron and an Ouzahn and even an Isis, for versions of them not-yet-Wakened.
And she's called them.
For Nautilus isn't the only place people can Awaken.

But here's the difference:
the her that is no longer was only concerned with rebuilding.
but the her that is now is not so peaceful. she has already fought a war once. And she didn't like it at all. But she'll do it again if it is necessary.

Her rebellion grows and still she runs. She is no Deva yet. But she is something strong. And those who flee the city find that they are not lost alone after all.
