[The man has to know that, surely. The faint frown remains on his face as he folds his arms over his chest. Apparently someone's determined to be stubborn about the whole thing.]
And even if I was so inclined to tell you what the last thing I remember was, I don't see what the point of it is. I'm in a place where there's monsters. That's nothing new. So who are you, really?

[ You couldn't tell at all? Granted he was different in every way: taller, light hair instead of black but the knowledge was there. ]
I first met you after the Battle of Culloden. Ben and Polly were with me then and we were captured by your band of Jacobites who thought we might be English sent out to loot the bodies of the dead. A terrible misunderstanding really but as the Laird had been injured and I happened to be a Doctor... well, we might have been able to work things out if the Redcoats hadn't arrived. Need I continue? Maybe I should mention the Annabelle?
[ With a insincere frown he placed a hand on his hip. ]
Surely you aren't about to make me pull out a recorder and belt out some off tune song.

[And Ben, and everything that happened when he first met the Doctor. He remembers it - well, not quite like it was yesterday at this point, but like it wasn't all that long ago. This man apparently remembers it, too. But how? He can't imagine how, unless... he shakes his head.]
No, it can't be. She was always teasing me about the Doctor changing his face. She can't have possibly been serious.
...Could she?

Regeneration. When a Time Lord dies, well... it isn't always a permanent condition. Our bodies renew themselves taking on a new, and if I say so myself, significantly better form.
[ Mild slight to your Doctor there Jamie but its done with love surely. ]
My second regeneration, your Doctor, was rather forced to regenerate by the Time Lords I'm afraid and I half expected you to have forgotten everything. That would have made explaining who I was rather more difficult...
[ With a smile he moved away from the door and closer to Jamie. ]
But you must be from before all that happened.
no subject
You mean, your people? What would they go and do a thing like that for? And why would've I forgotten it, anyway?
no subject
The Time Lords have a strict policy of non-interference with other cultures and, as your Doctor would put it, I do have a tendency to become involved. Not to mention that I uh... rather 'borrowed' the TARDIS when she was in a maintenance bay awaiting repairs. Both of these are crimes on Gallifrey which in your future I will be placed on trial for.
Naturally the outcome was decided rather swifty.
[ He doesn't bother going into specifics on that. ]
I was sent to live in exile on Earth with all knowledge of time travel taken from me and given a new face... A kindness I suppose. Maybe they thought it would help me fit in better with the locals.
[ And he had but... He looked back to his old friend concerned how he was handling all of this before mentioning what had become of him. ]
At the time I was still traveling with you of course but there was another called Zoe too. I'm not sure if you've met her yet but... both of you were given a full mind wipe so that you would have forgotten all about the time you spent traveling with me and you were returned to your own times.
I really never thought we would see each other again and... if we ever did I never thought you would have any memory of me.
no subject
What? Why would they go and do that for? We helped people.
[Okay, so maybe not everyone'd made it through, but things would've been worse off if they hadn't been there. He knows that, just as sure as he knows that Zoe wouldn't have liked what happened any more than he did. Since she's not here, though, he'll just have to be upset for both of them.]
And even if they made us stop traveling with you, why wipe our memories? I don't understand, Doctor.
no subject
[ In his opinion, of course. The Time Lords would have their own views on the matter. ]
As for your memories, I do think they meant it as a kindness. If you and Zoe had remembered traveling with me it might have been more difficult to return as seamlessly into your own timelines as you did.
[ He bobbed his head acknowledging something Jamie had mentioned earlier. ]
They did take into account that our goals had often helped people. Exile to Earth was one of the lesser possible punishments.

[It doesn't mean that he likes the idea of someone going in his head and mucking around with it, though, and he frowns.]
They're not going to coming here now to try anything, are they?
no subject
[ His smile took on a reassuring gentleness as he belittled the place he currently lived. Really, no one but him came out this way. ]
I doubt even the reach of the Time Lords could break through the grip that aeon holds on this world. No, we should be safe enough here. Provided...
[ He held up a hand and gestured to the locked front door. ]
You stay away from the weeping angel statues.
no subject
[That's a...fairly specific thing to stay away from, and while Jamie knows there's likely some reason why he should, he can't imagine what that might be.]
What do some old statues have to do with us being safe? And what's the door got to do with it?
no subject
Well for the moment the door is keeping them out there and us safe in here.
[ This more basic of door operations brought to you by one cheeky Doctor. ;) ]
The creature that chased you in here was a weeping angel statue. They aren't just old statues they come alive when you aren't looking at them and can move at incredible speeds. Fortunately just one of them isn't enough to take that door down. For all it's flaws this welcome house was built rather sturdily.
