"Anything that is missing, I suggest you report to the Task Force. That is supposed to be their job, is it not?"

"I don't know, I think if you go back to Sleep, your stuff is probably forfeit. If it even still exists. I'm not sure how that weird magic stuff works. It's been a few years--at least back home...how long as it been here?"

"A little over a year since your missed deadline. And your belongings are yours. Or they should be."

Once waved an elegant hand.

"Oh, sure, they should be, but, if we cease to exist here, do they remain? And if newly Wakened people come and take it, it's hardly a crime if you don't technically exist."

[papaillon]

"Since people can and have returned, they should be left to wait for you, so taking them should in fact constitute theft."

"Considering we can just make new stuff with our minds here, I don't think it's too bad of a crime."

He deserved worse.

"But, I'll get you your order, don't worry."

"One should not be forced into Bending if one chooses not to partake."

Once gave a small shrug. "No, no, I agree. That's a good point. I guess I'd assume people would give things back if you asked, since they could make a replacement on their own. Or build it from scratch."

Once-ler paused, studying Gabriel for a moment. "I'm honestly surprised you're still here. I would have thought you'd have taken your son and left by now. I was under the impression you weren't too keen on this place."

"We attempted to leave," he said, flatly. "It did not work. I suspect he did not actually wish to. We returned here almost at once, It was an altogether unpleasant experience, and one I do not wish to repeat."

Once understood that scenario meant that Gabe's son's will was stronger than that of his father.

Which would have been amusing, but, did feel some sympathy for the man.

"Kids are difficult. Or....so I've been told...."

[papaillon]

"They very much are, and he is at the age where he has decided he is no longer a child and should be the one to make all the choices," he said, unimpressed.

Let Once think that. Better that than he realize that Gabriel had other reasons for wanting to come back to this place.

"When I felt that way, I saved every cent so I could move out. Took a few years, but, it was...."

An utter disaster.

"...worth it. Mostly."

"He has no need to save up, nor shall he be leaving," he said, firmly. "I have assured that he shall never have a need for money." Not just by building Adrien a sizeable nestegg, but by ensuring he isn't the sort to squander it all away.

"Uh...how old is your son?"

Oncie was under the impression Gabriel's son was a late teen.

"If he's something like seventeen, you...you might want to prepare yourself, Sir. I'd hate to see you blindsided by something like that."

Unhappy young men tended to leave home, and the Once-ler was actually very sincere in his concern.

"Eighteen, and I assure you is his forbidden to leave until twenty one."

"...you can't make an eighteen year old stay under your roof."

Once stared for a moment, concern growing. The only reason he had stayed on the family farm as long as he had, was he needed a little money to fix up his wagon, and scrape together a few essentials.

If he had been in a magic city where you could think things into existence, the Once-ler would have been gone much sooner.

"Well, you can, but, the methods are generally frowned upon."

"Eighteen is not the age of majority everywhere in my world," he said, flatly. If they had to move to Mississippi, so be it.

"Well, sure, some places it's even younger."

[papaillon]

"And in some places, it is twenty one."
